How much faith should I put in AutoDetect : V

So I had a few random CTD's decided to reinstall after 1.3 and it pretty much stopped. However I prefer as stable a gaming enviornment as possible and have since reinstalled the game again clean. Reinstalled 12.1 drivers. Cut out some uneeded startup processes etc. to have my system running as lean as possible when playing. I plan on doing a clean boot before play and have steam in offline overlay disabled aero off CCC set to Performance over Quality and letting application decide, triple buffering etc.

The auto detect sets the game for Ultra/HIgh based on my hardware.....the only tweak I plan to make is to clean up shadow acne.
I guess what I want to know is what people think should I just set it to High? Make a custom setting by tinkering. I really don't care if it looks amazing just want it to be as stable as possible.

I don't know what the current situation is with ati drivers, but as far as hardware goes I can't see any reason why you couldn't run on ultra. I've got a crappy old core2duo and a geforce gtx550ti, and I can run ultra (albeit with fairly low fps) with perfect stability.

None, AutoDetect is junk.

My brother has a AMD Athlon 64 X2 @ 2.5GHz, 2GB RAM, GeForce 9600 GT & Windows XP. (30+ FPS)

I've put him on Ultra with shadows on medium and he plays at 720p, we both started out at 1.3.10.0. Me and him haven't had a single CTD/Freeze since day one and we have about 100+ Hours.

Your problem lies elsewhere and is probably Beth's issue, since your hardware is just fine. Corsair's are nothing to sneeze at.

Try running on low, and test for a while and see if it happens, you could also try AntiFreeze it might fix your CTD's. Hope v1.4 fixes some things.

Yeah I run everything else (and I mean everything have almost any game you can think of released this year or last that would be taxing in either the GPU or CPU department) on Ultra but Skyrim is definitely a unique creature.

I did relatively "little" modifications to my skyrimprefs.. but i get brilliantly good performance.. basically 45fps average outdoors and 45-60fps in towns and 60+ in caves or buildings

Autodetect is not to be trusted for any game. I use it as a starting point, then adjust things according to how the game looks and performs when I play it. To that end, I crank up what I can until the game chokes, if it is going to, on my rig, then back it down a bit.

With your hardware, I'd say Autodetect has pretty much nailed it. Try Ultra with shadows set to either High or Medium and see what kind of stability / performance you get. Blind faith is something to avoid, but needless fear, uncertainty and doubt are too.

I never use autodetect in any game. Set everything at max and then work your way down until smooth gameplay happens. Almost always its shadows (again, in any game) that need adjustment first.
