Game won't launch at all. (play at launcher, no error's)

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 2:18 pm

Out of the blue, skyrim decided to stop working, at all.

I am on the latest patch and was playing fine, no changes have been made to the game. I simply closed it down and when I went to restart. nothing happens.

to elaborate, I start the game get a the skyrim launch screen.
Click play.
Windows thinks about it, I hear the hard drive ticking over. Cursor changes to the loading icon. (blue circle in windows 7)
then, nothing ... no error or anything, just nothing happens. (skyrim exe is not running in task manager)

I looked over the forums and tried all the common fixes, including disabling all mod's, letting the game re-create ini files, checking file integrity and so on with no help.... but really, none of them really seem to address this issue. Skyrim does not even attempt to start.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way to work out whats going on, a log or something?

Any help is really appreciated..

We need your system specs. But this sounds like your HDD or something beginning to give out on you.

It sounds like you have something in common with the people in this thread here: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1331256-skyrim-no-longer-launches/

It also sounds like Steam/Bethesda may have stealth patched something that broke the game for some people. I'm personally in Steam offline mode since well, I don't like it when this stuff happens. Any ways may as well trouble shoot over in that thread since it sounds simlar.

I hear the hard drive ticking over.

Are you just using this as a turn of phrase? That could mean bad news for your hard drive.
Quiet crunching noise = a noisy drive.
Ticking = a failing drive.

Also have you tried running it with steam in offline mode? Try disabling Steam Community as well.

Thanks guys. No the hard drive is fine, everything else including games on my computer works. The game itself is actually on my primary OS solid state drive, but steam is on my other drive. I just meant I hear the HD steam is on working which may indicate it may be a steam issue. it's just peculiar because I just shut the game down after a decent session with no problems, and came back after a short break and it refuses to start.

Yes I have tried steam in offline mode and yes I have tried disabling the community...

Full system information please. There may be a pattern here and that information would be needed to see if there is one

Another longshot, but add skyrim.exe to the list of exceptions for your antivirus. I've seen some AVs prevent programs from launching because of false positives in updates.

And yeah at this point a dxdiag would be helpful.

Edit: If I understand correctly, you have skyrim installed outside of program files. If this isn't the case, that might be the issue, as UAC in Win7 can be pretty prestrictive. Giving yourself administrative access to the launcher and skyrim.exe might be worth a try anyways.

Thanks guys. Ill post a dxdiag sometime soon.

I don't run a monitored antivirus at all (have my reasons for this, have checked for viruses, system is clean also ran malwarebytes, also clean)
No software firewall either (have a hardware firewall)
UAC is turned off and application is actually installed in the default OC location C: but I have steam on the D drive. (this should be fine, never had a problem with it.) I already have Admin access to everything and the exe's are set to run as administrator.

Thanks. You'll see my edit in the other thread but this feels like a pattern to me. If the hardware doesn't match up with the others', then it may be time to look at the software. But one thing at a time, though. That's the best way to handle these things.

There's been a fair amount of driver corruption lately, try a clean sweep and reinstall your video driver.

OK, I'm running out of ideas (as I'm sure you are...I feel your pain)...last ditch on my part - have you tried deleting all local files? In C:\Users\XXXX\AppData\Local\Skyrim there may be some files ...in other games, that had load-up crashes, I've found cache problems and needed to manual clean it every so often. :( good luck mate

There are a few fixes for "game not launching when hitting play" in my signature. Try them.

Hi, things i noticed...

The original game....1.1 required the user to Put their sound at 44100 HZ (not good, but a workaround)
When Patch 1.2 arrived 44100 still worked for me ..But had to revert for various other reasons (to many to list)
Patch 1.3.7 did not like the sound @ 44100 (I was crashing constantly, literally one second.) So I set to 96000 Hz , and crashes stopped.
Patch 1.3.10 is also liking the Sound @ a higher rate...IE :24 bit 96000 Hz (since this patch is same as last) just added LAA.

oh, also someone mentioned they had this problem to me in my inbox and the fix was too chage the exe's to not run in administrator mode. Tried this also didn't work.

My game will not start with the steam launcher either...It just hangs with the hard drive hummming. But my game will start with steam in offline mode and launching though Wrye Bash stand alone version.

well nice to see i am not alone on this .. posted on it over at nexus .. somewhat diff symps then above. I can get to the imperial logo and at the point the smoke is supposed to start the hang drops out to windows. Now sometimes when redo cache (optimize) it will work sometimes not and as I indicated over there steam did something couple days ago that I did not catch (went online for another reason as also tend to stay in offline mode). would have reinstalled but hear a new patch might be coming this month so haven't yet and have tried many of same fixes. At least I can get in every now and then ... have to change something via steam or mess with the skyrim.esm, if it was 1 thing could figure it out but so many diff things cause it to run, just after get in once can't get in again. Have not tried stopping/bypassing the beth logo/imperial emblem load yet though. Just INFO so know more than 1 or 2 getting.

^^

Actually sounds like this is a bit of a different problem to mine. (although now after a few days solid play with no issue's I seem to be getting the above now, as well)

As for the problem in this thread I ended up finding out the issue.

It was actually due to a corrupt Control map file believe it or not. I deleted and got a new one setup and my problem went away.
