One handed skill at 15 in red on 5 saves ? What ?

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 3:58 pm

Just fired up the game and was checking skills when I noticed that my One handed skill was at 15 and red.
Which usually means disease or something bad.
Checked magic effects...nothing.
Drank 10 cure disease potions and visited several shrines...nothing.
Changed weapons, favorites, went naked, dropped everything, slept, waited...
Still a red 15

Went back one more save...One handed at 67.

All I have done for the last 10 saves is visited cities, selling and making stuff, brewing potions etc....no fighting..no vampires etc.

I am a werewolf ( planing on curing myself soon ) so I know I'll never get the well rested bonus...don't care...not really.
But that should not be affecting anything else?

Reason I'm bummed is I just spent the last 60 minutes traveling and crafting, buying and selling and now got to start over. That ring of 30 % One handed probably won't be there anymore...sigh.

Need to check my skills more often then waiting for level up.

It also was 15 in beast form.

If you level the skill up once it should sort itself out.

Thanks..

I'll hit up a trainer immediately...be my first time for any kind of skill training anyway ( lvl 37 )

Didn't train in Oblivion either.

But to get rid of this bug it'll be worth it.

And yes I know you can just take the money back from companions that can train skills.
I just prefer the old fashion way.

Though I might be tempted with heavy Armor as I'm 58 and those last 12 lvls are killing me ( weightless armor perk )

Didn't feel like remaking all that junk anyway,,,

Thanks again..

Did you happen to use any console commands?

I've had that happen, arbitrarily it seems, with Archery. No reason for it that I can see, certainly not a disease effect. The only "fix" I've seen is the same. level up, and it resets. Aggravating. I wish I knew if there was a cause, or if it's just a random bug.

It's a well known bug. Fortunately, it always fixes itself.

This just happened to me. I had just leveled one-handed up to 77 clearing out a cave. I walked a little way down the road, got attacked by a saber cat, and killed it. I came across a small camp, which had a one-handed skill book, boosting me to 78. Then I find a dungeon, made a save and went in. I ran into a couple of mages just inside and while fighting them sometihng else leveled up, but I didn't see what it was. I brought up the skill menu and saw my one-handed in red at 15. I loaded the save from before entering the dungeon and it was in red at 15 there too. The auto save from when I exited the cave was fine.

It appears to be just a display glitch, it's not actually 15. If you zoom in on the perk tree, it shows the correct skill next to the required skill for unlocking a perk. However, using the console command "player.getav onehanded" does return 15, but if it were actually 15, I would not be chopping heads off high level characters.

Since it's just a display glitch, ignore it and keep playing until it levels up on its own. If you want it fixed without waiting, you can use the console command "player.modav XX" and replace XX with the level it should be at. You won't lose your progress toward the next level either.

I played with the console commands, and they work. However, since it was only 8 minutes between when I noticed it and the last save, I loaded the save and re-traced my steps and it didn't happen again.

I have had this issue in archery and resolved it through training.

I now have a similar issue in smithing. the skill bar is full but it hasn't advanced to the next level. I can pay for and receive training but it fails to increase the skill.

I am playing still as a werewolf and have been using Vilkas as a companion whilst the wiping out the silver hand mission remains open.

I have used the console due to the helm of winterhold & companions purity quest bug. I had the witches' heads but the purity mission wouldn't start as the helm quest was not complete. I then wiped out the refuge to complete the helm quest but then I had to use the console to resurrect the boss as otherwise Vilkas didn't give me the purity mission. I still have the heads showing as a quest item. Without having checked I would expect to kill the last member of the Hand to complete that quest and then be able to continue the Companions quest line.

I have no idea if any of the above are related but would appreciate any help with resolving the smithing failing to advance as this is something I intended to work on.
