Skyrim & Fast travel.

Some people don't seem to like it. I'm personally not a big fan of running from Markarth to Riften :(

Which is technically fast travel that costs an insanely small amount of coin.

Don't like it, don't use it, simple as that. And vice versa.

End of topic, moving along.

The majority of the boards here actually act as the minority of most people that play TES.

You've probably notice that everyone here:

- plays on PC
- creates back stories for their character and puts in an insane amount of effort into defining their personality.
- has tedious rules to the game, not to affect gameplay, but to take RPing a little to the extreme. like running home for dinner at 6pm everyday, even though there's nothing in the game that makes any use of that.

These people see fast traveling as a way of either "cheating" or being "casual" because other people don't want to take a 15 minute walk through nature for every objective they need to complete.

Tried it for a character that didn't do a lot of combat stuff, was cool the first couple of times. The road from Whiterun to Riften is actually quite scenic. However, the trip back again immediately after handing in a quest made me give up and just fast travel.

I wonder what people do when they take roleplaying to the extreme when it's time to have sixy time with their husband/wife.

If they implemented mountaineering I might walk more. But if I want to walk I'm either forced to take a long detour or hump a mountain for a few minutes just to get over it. I simply reduce fast-travelling to only use it to go to towns/cities or between towns/cities. I just imagine there are more transport options available.

I just don't see walking everywhere as an option, given how far away certain quests are from their quest-giver.

Fast travel: nice to have, but easy to ignore if you don't like it.

Me? I just don't like the FREE part of Skyrim's fast travel. But since there are carriages that I need to pay for (even if it's a very small amount of coin, its the thought that counts), that's one of Oblivion's travel shortcomings eliminated. And I really appreciate them being there, because although I tend to play these games "hardcoe," I do not like having to travel from Solitude to Whiterun then Windhelm then all the way back to Solitude on foot for a single quest. Carriages provide a not-free shortcut. That is enough for me.

Only time I ever use the free fast travel is if the game crashed and I'm making up lost progress.

I tend to go overweight fast so without fast travel to get to towns and sell my goods I'd be halfway to Whiterun by now with 1700 weight on me.

I don't like fast travel. Doing it myself feels like some kind of cheating, like using a teleporter that doesn't even exist ingame. I didn't fast travel in Oblivion, or Fallout 3. In F3 it helped me discover lots of places, even start some nice quests, that else I wouldn't have discovered.

I respect whatever others do in their game, as long as their respect my decission. When I play this game it's like I enter some kind of virtual world, that I basically joined to enjoy and "live in", so I have fun doing it as real as I can, and want. I have my limits of course as I'm not a hardcoe (neither experienced) RPer. When I have to return back from doing a quest, it doesn't frustrate me to walk 30, or even 60 minutes, because I don't have any hurry to deliver the quest. If I don't have time that same day, I can finish my quest another day. I enjoy both the traveling / exploring, and the quest itself, so no hurries here.

But using that locgic, isn't pausing the game or loading your save when you turn the game one considered "cheating" because it's like you're using a magical "freeze time" machine that doesn't exist in-game?

Personal choice

If you only have a couple of hours a day or even a week, it would be no fun spending it walking from Whiterun to Rifkin, picking flowers and chasing butterfly's, well its ok the first time.

I used fast travel alot and have now become quite bored of the game.

I put my boredom down to using fast travel so now i have stopped using it.

Fast travel is ok if you just want to speed through the story for achievements but if you want to feel the game and become emersed in it you should avoid fast travelling.

Indeed, that's why I used the console to set timescale to 1, synchronized game clock with real life clock, I wake up and go to bed at same time my char does, therefore I never load the game or pause it, and if my character dies I will simply uninstall the game. Oh, and I bought gasoil UPS just in case, so my computer never stops.

I am annoyed by carriages. You pay the man, get in the back and he starts talking, but is cut off by the loading screen. Before my first trip on one, I thought it would be like the opening of the game, similar to how taking a Taxi worked in GTA4. Would have been epic if taking a carriage just had you sit in the back, listening to the driver the entire way to your destination unless you slipped him a few more coins to go faster.

It's immersion breaking but necessary due to the size of the game world.

The problem is the way it changes your decisions in that world. It's not just a way to cut down time spent on a tedious task, it becomes an influence to choosing where you're going. Let's say you're an archer near Riften and you're out of arrows and potions. It would be logical, for your character's story to be consistent, to go into Riften to restock. However, it's just as easy to go to Solitude just because it's prettier. It makes no difference whatsoever when it would have made a difference in the imaginary world Bethesda is creating in your head.

This boils down to the fact that there is no danger or any other penalty to fast traveling to make distances traveled actually be relevant in your decision making.

I can think of many different ways to fix this:

1) Make fast travel like on early Fallout games, where you'd see your progress on the map and you'd still have a chance of random encounters along the way that would interrupt your travel. Just like walking places but less tedious and faster. This way, you'd have a preference to travel to things that are closer to you.

2) Have some kind of item (called supplies for example) that would be depleted when fast traveling. This way you'd want to waste less of it by not traveling excessive distances needlessly or you'd have to spend more gold on supplies to fast travel all the time.

3) If you're set on using this game mechanic, at least justify it in the game lore. Make fast travel an alteration spell. Higher levels of the spell would allow you to travel further. Or a teleportation shout, with more words increasing distance.

I only fast travel to High Hrothgar and Sky Haven Temple, because they have special magical energies that I can pull myself towards as Dragonborn...and they are really hard to get to...

Hah! So true. It's such a shame they didn't finally impliment some kind of climbing system, especially considering this is one of the most mountainous parts of Tamriel. Spamming "jump" to force my way up cracks in a mountain is so wonky and annoying.
