new pc gamer (ps3 convert)

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 1:38 pm

Hi All ... I have been struggling with the ps3 version & decided to use a pc that I purchased a couple months ago from magic micro pc with a friends help (helped with selecting the guts of the pc components). Totally blown away with the graphics after downloading skyrim on steam. I have a gtx 560 & went through the install & defaulted to ultra settings. I played for a while & downloaded the skyrim nexus mod manager .... & when I 'launch custom skyrim' from the mod manager, I get the following error message -- 'X No custom launch command has been set'. When I go to the setting tab, I noticed that i can set ' command ' and ' arguments ' --- I have no idea what to put here. Any help is appreciated. Thanks (I am a pc noob, but a quick learner)

No worries, just launch it normally. I'm guessing the custom business is if someone wants to add some arguments to the command line or perhaps have some batch file that also lets something else load instead. Again you're fine just use the regular button, any mods you've activated will be part of it. Btw welcome to the dark side, Skyrim is certainly meant to be played on the PC. Also if you haven't heard of it go get and use Skyboost, its an instant monster boost to the game's performance without any downsides.

Thanks very much for the quick reply - I will check out skyboost. I think I might have to investigate this a little deeper, It don't see any of the mods available when I launch it normally & I keep getting the error that I have to 'set a custom launch command' .... strange, maybe i will need have a folder in the wrong place or something. I think youtube may have tutorial ... but I think i want to go the 'mod manager' route for now. Thanks again bro

Downloading manually is much easier. The Nexus Mod Manager is the most useless thing I've ever seen since the invention of the back scratcher.

Oh I also wanted to mention that once that mod manager has installed the mods you don't need it to ensure the mods are being used, I'll typically launch from the usual launcher and only load the mod manager when I'm actually seeking out mods since some how it interferes with a 3rd party injector that gives me proper menus in triple screen resolutions. So yah you can totally run the mod manager to soak up and activiate mods and then shut 'er down and load normally, the mods will still be in play.

You know how I know you don't use a lot of mods that at this point are starting to really overlap with one another? I used to install mods manually like you, but then I something something knee.

I'm using about 40 mods right now, all installed manually, with absolutely no problems.

Only 40? How quaint.

:P

But seriously the thing tells you when there are updates for them, it intelligently deals with conflicts and letsyou version track so you can very quickly activate and disable mods on a whim. I am in the neighborhood of about 90 myself and to single out some particular mod to pull it out and replace certain parts with another version or say swapping out an overlap to let some other mod come in...thanks but no thanks I like how the manager aids in those particular tasks.

I'll have a bunch more when the CK comes out.

And I track all the files I download on the Nexus site, so I can see when it's updated.

But I guess the manager helps some people, whatever.

The manager is good for people who don't know what they are doing or don't want to spend time fine tuning their mods. I personally always used tes4edit/fo3edit and soon, skyedit (when it's complete) to resolve conflicts: with this I know exactly what is going on with my game (had over 200 mods in Oblivion, not counting the stuff I merged, and over 150 mods in Fo3. As for Skyrim I only have a few as the most intesresting stuff will come with the ck and I am waiting for the patch to be released).

Anyway Wrye Bash is a very good tool too.

Hey Pav. He meant "Launch Normally" through NMM. See, in NMM, where it says "Launch Custom Skyrim"? Click the little arrow next to that and select "Launch Skyrim." That should get rid of the error. Handling mods manually can definitely save some stress if you're good at it, but for your case, I too recommend NMM. Either way, the golden rule is RTFM :)

Welcome to PC gaming!

it makes managing mods a lot easier and you don't have to spend time wondering where to put the mods.

I took another crack at runnng the nexus mod manager as 'launch skyrim' instead of 'launch skyrim custom' ..... the only mod that seems to work for me is the realistic water mod. seemed like a simple fix, but I am kinda unsure now ... it might be a problem with windows 7 64 bit, i dont have a program downloaded to open rar files (but i thought the pc automatically handles these with the file manager) this may take me a while to figure out. also might have something to do with having (2) program files folders ---one is 'program files' and the other is 'program files x86'. i loaded the nvde females mod, because I would definitely notice if this is working .... & they all still have their clothes on despite it being active & 'installed' in the mod manager. hmm ... totally confused & trying to research this further on the web
