I got a brand new computer for my son and Skyrim to try it out. Every other game we've tried works, but Skyrim refuses to launch. We get the initial splash screen, hit play and nothing. It just goes nowhere.

The initial load of Skyrim was from disk. I've tried clearing and downloading it from Steam. No change. So I tried to go into the steamapps folder and try running the TESV.EXE manually, I get the following error:

TSEV.exe - Bad Image

C:\Windows\system32\XINPUT1_3.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for report.

XINPUT1_3.dll is a DirectX file. I've renamed that file and installed DirectX from the The Elder Scrolls download AND directly from Microsoft. That file is the same size, date and time very time, so the file is fine. I'm at a loss at this point.

There is a fix that's been suggested for this. It is apparently a problem with direct x, not skyrim specifically.

The current fix to try is delete that file, and download and install Direct X 10 from the Microsoft website.

Edit: Also search my computer for that file incase it's also located elsewhere. After installing direct x again after removing all those files, reboot.

Thanks. I had done almost all of that, but it was the search for the DLL in other locations that fixed it.

On his 64 bit system, XINSTALL1_3.DLL is installed in two folders - Windows/System32 and Windows/SysWOW64 and it's not the same file (different file sizes). I'd previously found the one in the 32 folder, but didn't think to look for it elsewhere. And since DirectX doesn't overrwrite the DLL files on reinstall, I'd have never figured it out without the suggestion to search for it in other directories.

Interestingly enough, even though the reinstalled file was the exact same size with the exact same date stamp as the old renamed file in the WOW64 folder, the new installation of DirectX fixed it. Thanks again and maybe this detail will help someone else.
