strange horizontal lines all over

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 4:39 pm

http://imageshack.us/f/718/screenshot0w.jpg/ I'm having these strange horizontal lines all over and as I walk towards them they move down and up all together and sometimes increase in number. What may be causing this? I have HD4850 and amd x1090t x6. I'm only using skyboost but the problem persist when I delete it. So it's not about skyboost methinks.

It was low initially. Then I've tried ultra and high but the lines won't disappear.

The same old problem with the shadows in Skyrim, I'm afraid. We all have it at some point.

Is it something that happens from time to time or is it more like once you have it, it never leaves you ? :)

Try set this in SkyrimPrefs.ini: fShadowBiasScale=0.6000.

Try to set iBlurDeferredShadowMask=32.

Other than that, I don't know. Some people experience these shadow problems, some don't. I only experience these corrupted shadow line problems in Breezehome.

And that (Breezehome) is the place i used to tweak my shadows. getting them to an acceptable level there and the rest of the Game looks great.

You sure it didn't? As in you found that line within skyrimprefs.ini and edited it to 0.6 vs the 0.15 it currently is? That visual error is indeed the shadow engine misbehaving and that setting or well just something higher then 0.15 typically had solved it for me. See I'd always associated that effect with the shadow bias being low enough that it was triggering off of the poor bump-maps of a lot of surface textures and raising it to about .2 or .25 tended to make the threshold high enough that it stopped happening. But, I'm also thinking it could be the shadow map sizes. Anyways there's a lot of shadow settings in the prefs file, I'd get familiar with them and play around since you're going to inevitably do that any ways.

I used to get these sometimes when I was pushing my graphics card to the max, i.e. running the game on ultra with multisample anti aliasing at 8X.

This could also be the result of using transparency anti aliasing... try turning it off.

Or try dialing back the multisample anti aliasing a bit a bit.

Set your skyrim and skyrimprefs ini's to read only.

True enough eh? I agree it was roughly around when I was playing with my 3xGTX280s and maxing them out that I'd last seen them in my playing as well. I wonder if OP's shadow resolutions are something over the top like 8192.
