I'm having something VERY similar, it's not tearing... I have VSYNC on, I have FPS limited to 30, I have all the normal fixes but this terrible flickinger of the screen and flashes. Sometimes the bottom half of the screen would change to gray between flashes.

This started, for me, literally 3 days ago just out of the blue. I had not modified any settings, .ini tweaks, etc,. but had installed a mod here and there. I removed ALL mods and problem persisted...and then I noticed something VERY perculiar.

It only seemed to happen on one of my characters.

So I kept investigating...ultimately I stopped playing that character and switched back to another....and then noticed again, something perculiar.

When I pulled out my torch and walked around....and then DREW my sword out, the screen would flicker around just like it would with the other character, until the sword was fully drawn (hear me out, I know this sounds far fetched). I played with it over and over, and sure enough only when I drew the sword out, AND was holding a torch.

Additionally, the problem seemed to happen, occassionally, when standing NEAR those large cauldron's full of coal that have fire on them (all over skyrim and in towns). I don't know what they're called, but the primary thing to consider is FIRE.

So....my other character that this always seemed to happen on, is a Destruction Mage...his favorite spell.... FLAMES and FIREBALL. I loaded up the character and started running around, screen was "tearing" and "flickering" like crazy. I then changed to a different spell (or put my hands away) and the problem stopped.

Whenever I see the flame shader, the problem seems to come back. Oddly, with my fighter, I mostly only witness the screen tear when carrying a torch during animation for drawing my sword, like seeing the TOP of the torch causes the flickering.

But again, this only started happening about 3 days ago. I have removed ALL mods and refreshed my install AND reset my .ini files and cannot get the problem to go away.

yeah im allmost 100% sure mines to do with monitor refresh rates and stuff, it all most goes away if the game plays at 60fps wich is my lcd tv refresh rate, its a teknika cheapy. but if i cap my fps to 50 i get flicker or anything under 60, allthough it seems to go away at 30fps too, but then i get bad jerky ness and stutter

I get this sometimes, but when it happens to me my character acts like he is swimming when the flickering is happening.

It will not be possible for anyone to confirm or deny whether all of you have the exact same problem. "Me, too"! is a useless comment, since no two PCs are alike, as soon as they leave the store, and in fact many were different while in the store, in spite of the component lists each carries. Provide at least the hardware specs for yourselves along with OS & driver data.

I'll give you my specs anyway though:

-i7 3930k
-gtx 580 classifed ultra
-32 gigs of ram
-win 7 64 bit
-running latest nvidia drivers
-240 gig ssd

if you think any other specs are relevant, let me know.

ok, just want to update this thread because I think I just fixed the problem. Someone mentioned in one of the youtube videos I just posted that it appears the game's fps goes too high on higher end machines. The game pretty much just has problems when the FPS gets too high. Apparently this causes the flicker problem.

So i just installed this: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34#content

I changed the setting in cfg so my max fps was 50, and it appears to have solved my problem.

Did you turn this bMainZPrepass=0 to 1? That does that, leave it at 0. If you didn't, what also does that is overclocked memory on the video card and its very common that Bethesda games expose this. I see the classiefied ultra edition so that's a factory overclock, as an experiment clock the vram down to the standard 4011mhz and give it another go.

Hey bumpin, No i did not change the bMainZPrepass value from 0. I don't really want to have to fuss with the clocking of the vram just because the game has an issue. The fps limiter seems to have done the trick and the game seems to be running smoother too. So unless the problem returns I think the main issue is just fps goes too and the game has problems with that.

Aye, downing the FPS did it too eh? Did you have vsync turned off entirely perhaps? That will indeed create these conditions too with Bethesda games, they have some unholy pact with vsync or the magic 60 (or in some circles 64) FPS mark.

Ya, lowering the FPS worked very well, and like I said, as an added bonus, the game is running evem smoother than it did before, And yes, I had already turned vsync off.
