Skyrim Launcher being flagged by virus scan

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 10:56 pm

This has never happened with the launcher up until today, but every time I try to click on the launcher, it flags as a virus, saying that the virus scan has found CRYPT.WIN32 virus. I am almost certain that this is a flase positive, though find it odd that my virus scan did not flag the launcher before. Any suggestions as to off I should reinstall the game, or if there is a way to make it so my anti virus software will stop examining the launcher? I'm currently using ESET NOD 32 Antivirus.

Try scanning the file by using http://virusscan.jotti.org

That wbsitee uses numerous AniVirus programs simultaneously.

For some reason, the site is not working for me. I even tried searching for it in google and ended up finding a blank page when I clicked the link. Either the site is down, or my Firefox is being really stupid today.

Try http://www.virustotal.com/. Does the same thing (you can upload a file for scanning by 40+ engines.)

Apparently my anti virus is blocking me from uploading the file as well. The Skyrim logo is now gone from these icons, and they are just showing a generic icon, and when I try to upload the file, it tells me I do not have permission to open the file.

You'll have to disable the AV of course before uploading it. :)

Delete the launcher and verify steam cache to download a fresh one.

After searching the net, it looks like this is a known problem with my antivirus, as others have had it detecting Skyrim as the same kind of virus. As I am not too familiar with how to set exceptions in ESET NOD32 guess I have some reading to do.

Also, I was finally able to scan the file at VirusTotal. Not surprisingly, out of all the scanners there, the only one to detect it was the one I am using lol. As such, I just set my steam folder as an exception for my virus scanner, as I hear my scanner has trouble with more than just Skyrim on Steam. Thank you all for your time, as I am glad to know that everything was just a false positive.

Just had the same problem with the same AV software. If you want to disable the blocking
open up the ESET window
click on Setup icon in the left
click on "Enter advanced setup..." then expand
Computer
Antuvirus and antispyware
and click on Exclusions

then work your way down to the Skyrim directory in ...Steam/Steamapps/common

I then had to exclude both TESV.exe and SkyrimLauncher.exe by
Click on TESV.exe and the on Add

Hope that makes sense/is helpful.

Thanks for posting that information, it will be good to have it here in case others encounter the same kinds of problems we were having.

It's called a false positive, some programs I wrote are flagged by one or two virus scanners even though they are perfectly safe.

Looks like your dodgy AV software needs an update to ignore skyrim, or the launcher, or both, or you need to add the exe files to an exception list (surely it has one) lol.

Just use avast. Never had a virus since using it (5 years).

Edit: Also seems like you should be posting over in the eset forums.

It was probably caused by the launcher having the Steam wrapper in it now since it operates similar to other virii.
