The Dark Brotherhood has some really good assassin armor although the Thieves Guild's Nightengale armor looks cooler imo and provides very similar bonuses.

there is a more combat orientated thiefs set from a quest but its not "end game" level.

http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Linwe%27s_Armor_Set

this page has a list of sets you might fancy a look at (mix and match)

http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Light_Armor_%28Skyrim%29

there are actually A LOT of different Dark Brotherhood set parts.

finding out about them all will take some research :P ......*whisper*....Ancient Shrouded Armor...

DB cloth cawl, don't remember the name, bonus to sneak.
DB light armor gloves, double backstab damages.
DB/Nightingale light boots, muffle sound.
Nightingale light armor, stamina + resists.
Ring with % to fortify 1 handed dmg.
Necklace with % to fortify sneak.
Of course a Dagger in main hand, like blade of Woe or maxed out Deadric dagger.

Using that gear and power attacking backstab you can do 60x damages this is doable with looted only gear.
BUT, you will look like [censored] and you will be as weak as a little girl if spotted so it is hit and kill or be in trouble.

Also, you should be able to make the same armor yourself by enchanting a full set (to get full set armor bonus) with smithing and enchanting at high levels (can disenchant Linwe's armor to learn the effects).

Is fortifying sneak worth it if it's already 100? I'm pretty much invisible as it is, unless I sneak right in front of someone in broad daylight.

Pretty sure fortify skill X or Y affects directly the action and not the skill itself.
Will have to check this to be sure.

A DIY list if you have enchanting and/or smithing. Note that daggers does not benefit from Fortify One-handed enchants, but do benefit from the Armsman perk.

Armor:
The difference between glass/dragonscale/elven in armor values is minute. Elven is the lightest of the three, but go for style.
If you want to keep the DB armor look, you can find an enchantable set called Worn Shrouded, in the Dawnstar sanctuary (the worn gloves aren't pre-enchanted - the backstab enchant on those is a display bug).

Helm: Fortify Archery (+ your choice if you have Extra Effect. I'd take Waterbreathing)
Chest: Fortify Health or Stamina (or both with Extra Effect)
Gloves: Fortify One-handed or Archery, depending on your preference (or both). Keep a pair of shrouded gloves for the backstab multiplier.
Feet: Fortify One-handed (and your choice of fire/frost resistance with Extra Effect). Muffle isn't needed with a high sneak skill and the muffle perk.
Necklace: Fortify One-handed or Archery (and Magic Resistance with Extra Effect. If Breton, go with Fortify One-handed and Archery).
Ring: Fortify One-handed or Archery (and Magic Resistance with Extra Effect. If Breton, go with Fortify One-handed and Archery).

You will probably want to make a set that gives you 85% magic resistance and at least 50% fire/frost/shock resistance, for those mages that can kill you in two spells otherwise.

Weapon:
The difference between daedric, ebony and glass is pretty small. You won't feel much a difference.

Sword/Mace/Axe: Absorb Health (+ Absorb Stamina with Extra Effect)
Dagger: (Fiery) Soul Trap (+ Damage Shock)
Bow: Damage Frost (+ (Fiery) Soul Trap).

Keep Azura's Star or the Black Star in your bags as you'll need to recharge those weapons a lot :)

Thought I checked but will make sure. Though you can enchant the Worn Shrouded you cannot improve them any with smithing. Perhaps because they are clothe iirc?

Is the thieves guild master's armor levelled like the nightingale armor or can I breeze through their questline at low level and still get the best version?

Indeed. That seems to be an oversight, as they count as light armor.

Is the thieves guikd master's armor levelled like the nightingale armor?

Nope, that'll always have the same stats.

If your doing t from a roleplaying perspective and you hate the DB, Just to the Arentino quest then when your in the shack, kill Astrid, take her armor and the unique dagger

"Blade of Woe"

You can also wipe out the DB and receive more armor and robes.
