Overclocking my AMD FX-4100. Need more performance. Bout 5FP

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 12:12 am

Currently sitting at 35 FPS at the top of Whiterun stairs. I want to gain a few more. Buddy of mine managed to pull 5.1GHZ stable with an aftermarket cooler. I don't need to go that high but 4.7-4.8 is my goal. Should I increase Bus speed more just work with just the multiplier? Also to go higher will I need to adjust or touch the voltage more. If so by how much would you estimate?

Here is what the CPU is at now according to CPU-Z

Current PC Specs

FX-4100 @ 4.5Ghz
Kingston 16GB DDR3 1333Mhz RAM

Use Skyboost R4 will net you an additional 10-20fps.

Also the settings you use in the Skyrim Launcher and Nvidia Control Panel will allow us to help you better. I have a GTX 580 with a i5-2500k @ 4.2Ghz and have a constant 60fps on max settings so I can help.

Just did a slight OC myself......20 % both MEM and BCLK....free update....lol

That said find a good OC guide and follow it. best to find your MAX BCLK first..your stable now? 250 is a good ass number for the Bus!! Whats your Ram running At?

Don't know AMD any more, (Intel to many years now) To get higher i would expect you would need to up the Voltage closer to 1.4 but thats something you have to decide.

Find ya a good guide and take it Slow...Monitor Temps and test the crap out of err.

My final test for overclock...all at the SAME time..

Prime95 (running on 4 of my 8 threads)
Furmark (window 640x480)
Fluidmark (window 640x480)

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee72/camaro_69_327/Oblivion%202011/test4.jpg

Don't have a current PIC of that torture test. But it was pulling 501 watts(41.75 amps) thru my UPS. With a note saying not to go any higher.... hahahahha

Idle is 216 Watts.

I understand you are trying to help but he doesn't need to risk his system overclocking with his system. His Ghz is higher than mine but he has lower fps, it's the settings he uses which is the problem and he need to tell us what they are.

did you read his questions?...or just the first line?but i agree...settings and Skyboost would get him more then any more overclocking...but i tend to answer what is asked ,not just tell them what i want to.

I read his first line.It said he has low fps, he thinks that OC'd = more fps.

If he wants to learn how to just OC then he would be better off on tomshardware or overlockers. If he wants to save himself the trouble of OC'ing then I can help him with the settings and he can enjoy 60fps. But you know what I can't be bothered anymore.. so you guys get on with it.

Skyboost has already given me the boost. However I am still sitting on the same FPS that was in my OP. I did mange to OC to 4.7Ghz last night but it failed after about 2 hours of gameplay. That 200mhz boost gave me another 4 solid FPS.

I am running ridiculous settings in my INI files along with all the HD/HQ Texture packs and RCAN 1.6.

At this point my game looks like Crysis 2 but I just want a few more points of FPS without having to drastically alter my ini settings and loosing overall picture quality.

Here are my ini settings at present.
I don't know how to use spolier tag. Sorry guys.

bReflectSky is buggy, because when bReflectSky=1, the sky reflections in the water follow your character movement. If you run and thus headbobble, the whole water reflection will headbobble as well.
It drags down about 1-4 FPS, depending on situation.
I recommend turning it off. Sure water looks better, but since it's buggy and drags FPS at the same time, I'd turn it off if I were you.

Turning down fTreesMidLODSwitchDist to something like 10000.0000 can also drastically increase FPS, with not that big visual difference except for more tree branch pop-ins closer to you.

@ OP

Thanks for uploading your settings. I never tweaked my ini file but I copied and posted your settings into my computer and it looks a lot better and runs beautifully, better in fact @ 60fps.

Are you playing on Ultra? What is your settings for Shadows? High or Ultra? If latter change to High.

What resolution? What is your AA and AF and type in Skyrim Launcher and/or Nivida Control Panel? Do you have Ambient Occlusion on?

Are you using Skyboost R4 SSE2 or R3? The former is significantly better. RCRN in my opinion is ok but it lowers my fps between 4-5 and it looks bad anyway. You can be looking at someone face in the middle of the day and its dark and so is most the enviroment.

Please answer these questions and I can help further.

AMD CPUs are not equivalent to Intel CPUs with regards to speed. AMD's may have higher speed ratings at times, but generally an Intel CPU of a similar nature with a lower speed will give similar results. It's more about architecture than clock speed. AMD's architecture is not as good, generally, but they are able to achieve higher clock speeds to offset this somewhat. If you really want to crank it up, you'll want an aftermarket cooling solution.

Just my 10 cents.

Also, he's got an AMD GPU. No NCP is available.

To use spoiler tags...

[spooiler] paste your txt here [/spooiler] remove the extra "o"s <In the edit box you type your post, top line has 3 icons, 3rd one (just before "font") mouse over says "special BB code" in the drop down is also a spoiler....

In skyrimpref.ini make sure ...."bFloatPointRenderTarget=0" is a 0 and not 1..unless you need it to get ENB mods working..ENB mods wants that set to 1 but all i see is a serious loss of FPS. I took screenshots of it both ways and cant see a difference, except loosing 20 FPS. Saw it ...
Dont worry so much about FPS , if the game is smooth and not getting large drops in FPS ...Play!!

Also a note about Auto saves.....Beth game are infamous for giving you corrupt saves with these on. I always turn all auto everything off. Hard save FTW

Spoiler
not too hard

Eh, I'll make it easier to use spoiler tags:

[spoiler][/spoiler]

Also, both are true. Though, I've been running the game to test out autosave since it was released and I have yet to find any issues. Got over 300 saves archived, just in case though. Never can be too careful in games. :P

Skyboost R4 Test 2

Shadows set to ultra however changing the shadow settings in the ini overrides this settings. So realistically im probably at super mega ultra in that department.

Change shadows to High. Looks the same and you gain another 10fps. Fps problem solved.

That does not make sense though lol FFS. All changes through the launcher simpy load a preset number on the shadow variables in the ini settings. Thus doing what were doing and changing settings individually, (ie Fshadowfistance or resolution size) your simply overriding the pre set settings of the launcher thus putting you back to step one as in OP.

If you want to get information about overclocking go to this website:

http://www.overclock.net/

While there are people here who know a lot about overclocking its the passion of most of the people who frequent that website.

I know what it does, no need for the 'ffs'.

Like you said you have "super mega ultra" shadows, but if you change in the launcher to High then it will change the ini settings lower and you will gain another 10fps. It looks the same anyway, the shadows are rubbish in this game.

Your choice!

Just decreasing the shadow distance in the ini will already give you better looking shadows AND more performance.
If you go for high shadows, try setting iBlurDeferedShadowmask=8 or such, this will blur the pixelated outline.

But as others have pointed out, for overclocking it's best to visit forums that specialize on overclocking, you will get more and better help there.
