the quest is Elder Knowledge, I was at the point where I needed to talk to the orc librarian guy in the College. He didn't have any of the topics I needed, nor the books, and when I tried to skip that step using console commands I couldn't get the info from Septimus either. Resetquest doesn't seem to have any affect on anything. Setstage mq205 jumped it ahead, but without the books or triggers being hit I couldn't progress in the quest. So I read up and saw I needed to finish the mage quests. So I did that. Now the Elder Knowledge quest isn't even in my log book. Nice one, UESP.

So, I've tried setstage mq205 10, 20, 30, etc. I've tried resetstage mq205, and nothing is working. I've gone back to all of the quest starting locations, everyone that was involved, and the quest is completely lost. In other words, my main quest is somehow completely lost. Can anyone help me figure this mess out? Please?

Glad to know that I can't get help with my software issues in the Skyrim Hardware and Software Issues forums....

I don't even play on pc but I browse here because I'm looking to buy one. This happened to me and for some reason I went back and there it was, dialogue was finally there. I don't remember anything special I did but I went back many hours later and I proceeded with the quest. If it you can't find a fix maybe wait like I did, sorry I can't help more but at least it's nothing. I can't stand when people point out its in the wrong section without at least attempting an answer.

I would say do whatever possible to get around this because the next part of that quest is amazing and it would be a shame to miss out on the best thing Skyrim offers. Oh and I did go back after I completed everything and I'm not sure if this helps or you know this but after you finish the eye of Magnus you can talk to that old head guy again and he will tell you that the you need the staff one last time. After you do that it's officially the end of the quest. Basically after you fight that guy while using the staff the quest ends but talking with the old dude restarts it.

Yeah the quest isn't even in my log anymore. I've finished all the quest lines I want to up to that point, and I can't finish the main quest now. I've got something like 90 hours on this character. I really, really don't want to start all over because the game broke

And I don't know how the hell this would belong in cheats and hints. The game is broken, fools. BROKEN--main quest NOT THERE.

Have you tried a previous save from b4 the main quest and mage quests? (if you have one) It's always a wise thing to make multiple saves. Personally I make 2 saves b4 every major event or quest in addition to the normal quick saves and auto saves. I know thats a lot of saves but it's better to be safe then sorry.

So just to be clear on UESP it says that the main quest line for the college must be finished then that book guy will talk. The eye of Magnus quest does fall from your quest log as if it's done, then you must talk to Tolfdir once more and the quest will restart and he will say something like close the forever or something along those lines. I thought for sure that your problem was that you didn't go back and speak to that Tolfdir after the quest ended. Sorry I couldn't help.

My most recent previous save is from about 30 hours ago play time, right before I became a vampire. I've been a vampire and finished both the dark brotherhood and thieves guild quests, as well as a ton of misc, all the mage college, and others. And I'm not longer a vampire, but a werewolf now. I'd really like to just be able to add the main quest again. How do I do that?
