ATI 12.1 WHQL drivers and Xfire Skyrim unhappiness

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 11:28 pm

FXAA on, no AA. Specs below. When I first installed 12.1 drivers along with 11.2 CAP, and restarted Skyrim with Xfire on, I got horrible flickering and tearing. After messing around for a while I managed to force AFR through CCC which fixed the flickering. Decent framerates with this done, but the rates jump and stutter at times when turning around real fast outside or in cities, dropping to as low as 18 fps in cities for a split second and 22 fps outside for a split second, whereas the fps normally are 35 or better in cities and 45 or better outside. So there are still issues with CFX...maybe someone has a suggestion for this?

Also, I switch to in-game AA (multisample or adaptive in CCC, doesn't matter) from FXAA and I am still getting that texture decal popping problem. I had read that ATI had fixed that way back with the 11.11 drivers. Anyways, its apparent they did not truly fix it.

Question is: how do I fix these problems...more specifically, can I force AA and AF through CCC, shutting off Skyrims in-game AA and AF, and NOT get that texture decal problem? And I KNOW that this laptop can perform better than my desktop...ATI's drivers svck though...but at the moment my 6 year old desktop is outperforming my 1 year old laptop.

Same here, having the flickering issue. 12.1 drivers and CCAP(Custom Catalyst Application Profile). Turned off AA and AF ingame, using FXAA. Forced AF in CCC. No mods whatsoever. Getting some horrible flickering, especially around waterfalls and such.

The 12.1 preview was good, the official 12.1 destroyed my game. Check out the 12.2 preview, which for me is like the 12.1 preview. The flickering and misplaced texture problem is gone for me.

I'll give it a shot, wish me/us good luck... I'll report back whether it works or not.

Edit: SUCCESS! At least so far!
So I uninstalled the Custom catalyst application profile(CCAP), and uninstalled the 12.1 driver, then cleaned the registery with CCleaner(not sure if this actually was necessary. I just tend to do it out of a habit). I then installed the 12.2 Preview-driver, but skipped any CAPs whatsoever, to try it out without any at first. Forced 16AF through CCC, disabled AA and AF ingame(haven't tried with it on since I don't feel the need for it personally) along with everything at ULTRA with FXAA enabled, etc etc.

Running at a constant 60FPS with no flickering whatsoever. Every issue I had previously is gone, my FPS in Whiterun and Markarth seem to have improved as well. Before it could dip to 40~45 FPS when looking at certain areas. They're now at a steady 60FPS as well. I'm running Crossfire by the way, which was a major issue before.

I should point out that I'm using 2x HD5850 for my setup.

Edit #2: It seems that this only applies to the 1.4b patch. Well, the flickering doesn't appear, but the FPS reduces to 30~40 without the patch. With the patch it won't drop below 60 anywhere so far. I'm honestly impressed if they've managed to optimize.
