Perking with Sword and Board

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 8:32 pm

Hey guys. I've been playing my sword & shield warrior type for awhile now. He's level 32, 100 one handed skill and 95 blocking. I'm wondering if it's worthwhile to perk into one-handed abilities. While I do swing a sword around a lot, I typically use 90-100% of my stamina for blocking and power bashing. Is there really any point in spending perks on the one-handed tree? I'm not looking to min/max, but I'd really like to know if anyone else has thought it useful. The only thing I can think of doing with it right now is getting the +x% to one handed damage perks.

The +damage perks are essential, with five points you'll be doing twice as much damage. Try making or finding a sword with the Absorb Stamina enchantment, it will allow you to use a lot more power attacks.

What have you, as a warrior type, been spending your perks on if not one-handed, block, heavy armor and the like?

You can't go wrong with the damage entry level perks. Personally I tend to stick to those and the cost reduction on standing power attacks perk to free up other areas for perks but that's a play style thing. I also tend to avoid the weapon type perks because a lot of the game I'm switching weapons, but again play style. That said I favor swords with shield set ups because the faster swing animation means you got more set up time for bash/swing/bash,etc.

I picked the sword and axe perks and passed on the mace perk. Taking all would expend too many perks, while taking one would be to narrow and would impede me being able to take the best weapon I currently have, and skipping all three would just be giving up too much damage potential.

Ironically I'd probably be more open to taking if I took one the sword perks with my characters if not for the Mace of Molag Bal. That thing is just too much fun to use.

Ah. Yeah, you gotta go with the weapon you like. I was tempted to take the mace perk at the start - cutting down on enemy armor seems like a wise expenditure of a perk - but I suppose I was too enamored with how the Bethesda Marketing Department Mascot Viking looks with the axe and sword in hand.

I've been spending points on Heavy armor and Block primarily, with a few in enchanting as I level it. I was just holding off putting some into one handed, I've got about 10 unused at the moment, deciding whether to put them there or not. Thanks all.
