The strangest thing, really. I can be standing around, doing nothing, talking to someone, running around fighting, anything. Even reading a book, and suddenly, my frames drop. I can wait and wait and it will continue to stutter. However, if I alt tab out, muck around for a minute with something else then alt tab back in, everything is fine. But its only a temporary solution (five minutes, maybe?) before its dropping to near-nothing again. I've messed around with all the settings, and nothing seems to make a difference. Anyone having a problem like this?

Thanks, your setup is nothing to sneeze at. That 9800GX2 is a beast but SLi. Not sure how Skyrim reacts to SLi but not well I hear. Try turning off one card and see how it runs then.

The odd part is, it was running great under this setup until recently. Figured it might have been the patch or something (1.3? Doesn't work any better under 1.4beta either.) Only thing I changed was I bought my Diablo 3 Headset; but I ran a check, and theres no possible conflicts in the audio drivers.

SLI disabled, no difference. Still stalls up. Im starting to think I may have to uninstall/reinstall after all. Shame. Long install.

when i have too many save files my game will stutter

I noticed this too, however i usually experience a constant frame drop of about 10 fps when i alt tab out of the game and back into it. Never goes back up. Only restarting the game will help.
Also, since installing 1.3 and also with 1.4 i had experienced a severe drop in my framerate. Despite their compiler improvements or Skyboost, i am looking at a significant drop here...

What about the influence of graphic drivers on performance ? Currently i am using AMD 12.X (8.95) Unofficial Drivers from January 17th -- Anyone made experiences with these?

This is "normal" Skyrim behaviour. There are more posts about this and the most likely guilty party is videocard memory (even high end videocards). Somehow with Skyrim it gets "full" and when Alt/Tab it gets purged. This is backed up by some people who got the same problem, made logs of their videocard behaviour and did see this actually happen: videomemory gets full, Skyrim starts to stutter, Alt/Tab and back, videocard memory is purged and Skyrim runs fine again. SO this maybe also is happening with your card.

Have you checked you GPU temperature? Mine, upon reaching 85o or so, suddenly fps dropped, when I alt+tabed it cooled and fps were better for a while. I fixed it changing the GPU thermal paste, now the max temperature it reaches is 64o.

Temps were fine too 75°C in heavy fights -- dont forget, its a thin Macbook
