Bizarre NPC related sound issue

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 1:08 am

Okay, so here's the deal.

Whenever I enter a scene in which NPCs are interacting with in-game objects, the sound acts up, and it sounds like as if someone is banging on a kettle drum, or dropping a dish to the floor. It's really bizarre, and by the nine is it annoying. The "bonking" sound is so persistent, it makes the game unplayable, as I cannot hear the NPCs talking, or anything else for that matter, when this bug occurs.

Due to a lacking technical vocabulary I can't explain this "issue" better - it happens every time my character is in the vicinity of aforementioned NPCs, escpecially in taverns/shops when they are interacting with objects on the counter.

I've spent many hours searching for a fix, but I have yet to find someone else experiencing the same problem.

Here are my hardware specs:

- intel i5 2500K
- Nvidia GTX 580
- Asus XONAR DX soundcard
- Corsair HS1 USB soundcard
- 8 gig DDR3 ram

A friend of mine is running skyrim on an IDENTICAL rig, and does note experience these issues.

What I've tried so far (to no avail):
- Run the game on a different pair of headphones
- Run the game with a different pair of speakers
- Run the game with a separate, standalone USB headset
- Run the game with sub 24bit, sub 96000hz sound settings
- Reinstalling the game _several times_
- Updated my soundcard drivers and my graphics card drivers

I crave to enjoy Skyrim as it should be, so if anyone, though doubtly, knows how to fix this, all replies are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I think I know what your problem is. Have you disabled vsync atall? As in, have you set iPresentInterval to 0?

Also what game version are you playing on?

Make sure that if/when you reinstall the game (should that ever truly be necessary) that you're removing (i.e. deleting) your ini files from \documents\my games\skyrim as well as \steamapps\common\skyrim and allowing the launcher to create new ones. Also make sure you have returned any application-specific settings in your video drivers/Nvidia inspector to default values.

The problem you are describing has nothing to do with sound, strangely.

When the game goes over 60 frames per second, the physics in the game goes bonkers. You are actually hearing pots and pans and all sorts of objects flying around or banging into things or walls.

I was running the latest version of the game (as updated by steam). Now, I am running the the BETA patch version (still on steam) hoping it would resolve the issue, but alas.
Yes, I have turned Vsync off, and reading your follow up post, I take it I should enable Vsync again?

Yes, in skyrim crazy things happen, not just with physics, if you have vsync off.

Thank you. I will try reinstalling tonight. reverting the .ini to the default values didn't affect my game at all. Hopefully it will fix it! Thanks again!

No probs mate :) when the inis are made ensure iPresentInterval is set to 1 in prefs and in skyrim if needed.

Okay, so I've reinstalled and tried running the game with Vsync on - though, the problem still remains (to much frustration).
However, I tried running the game at 60hz on my monitor, and guess what, the "jumpy-casserole-syndrom" disappears.

Now, this makes me wonder, what kind of bug is this really? Are there anyone else out there running the game with a 120hz monitor properly? Could it be that the game goes crazy above 60FPS? Is there a way to lock the maximum number of frames, so I could play the game at 120hz? Or more importantly, is this a known issue and/or is it being looked at?

Yep as I posted above, the game goes crazy over 60fps. The physics and other things are tied to the framerate :P
