You need to get the investment perk on the left side of the speech tree, I think it requires 70 in speech.

Unlock the perk
Talk to the shop trader
Click the option, "I'd like to make an investment in your business" or something like that

Thanks! I did not realize it was a perk thing. What's the upside? Do they get better items? A new building? (lol)

Nah just 500 coins more to trade with
But there is a glitch or something with the Riverwood trader where is money goes above 10k

Also, there is one specific trader who gets considerably more money.
