Weird normal map issues on Mod armor

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 9:43 am

I've noticed any time i install a mod that adds new armor, or modifies existing .nif files the textures show up as all black in game on the new mesh, or updated parts of an existing mesh.

Now until yesterday I was stumped (not really a 3d artist here), but I noticed a report of a similar issue resolved by flipping the normal maps in NIFSkope and updating the tangent space, so I tried it, and it worked for the first mod I downloaded that added items like this.

However, I just got on Nexus and downloaded another armor and weapons mod ( http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=7450&navtag=file/images.php?id=7450&tab=3 ) and this one shows up all black as well on all new areas of the armor mesh (that is to say all of it). Others don't report having the same issue however, and the weapons from the mod work just fine.

Is there some kind of setting I missed somewhere? Retexture mods work for me, just not new meshes. It's quite frustrating to have to flip every normal on any new armor mesh added by a mod.

I would ask the modder on Nexus but it's not really unique to his mod at this point, its more my system it looks like.

This is a screenshot of what I'm talking about, note the black spines with inverted normals that've been added to the daedric mesh.

Updated for clarity, this second screenie shows a fixed variant i made of the first item, but the new gloves, these do not seem to be affected in game by flipping their normal maps and updating.

And now I'm utterly confused. lol.

Any help would be massively appreciated.
