Give the game to John Carmack

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 5:38 am

Since you guys own id software and have access to John Carmack why don't you let him take a look at the source code and fix it up? Sort of stupid not to use him as a resource he's an excellent programmer.

Except 1) He has his own projects to work on and 2) His experience is limited to the engines of the games he's worked with. His experience with the Creation Engine is going to be limited at best.

With what result?
Carmack blaming the GPU vendors "faulty" drivers for the bugs?

Aside from the fact that he isn't actually an employee based at Bethesda Studios, the release of Rage on PC was hardly a triumph (even by Carmack's own admission).

Yes! We could turn The Elder Scrolls games from huge landscaped open ended games with drop-in modability into corridor shooters! What could be wrong with that?

Rage has open ended environments and runs at 60 fps on my PS3, it also looks amazing and I haven't encountered a single bug. Skyrim doesn't even work on a PS3 and looks worse (taste in art direction aside.

John Carmack could fix Skyrim. He could fix the bugs and make the game work but Bethesdas programmers are too jealous to let him try so we have to suffer with an unplayable game.

This is the PC forum, not the PS3 one. My comments releted to that platform.

How? How can he fix a game when he has zero experience with the engine and game code?

And Rage was a buggy, almost unplayable mess on release as well and it's also not open world. It's very liner and paths to each area are often tightly confined with little room for deviation.

John Carmack's day has come and gone I'm afraid, he laid much of the groundwork for the tech we all take for granted but that doesn't mean Bethesda could just dump their engine on him and expect miracles, and as others have pointed out Rage was a mess on release.

All I'm saying is maybe Bethesda should hire another company that specializes in software development / testing / optimizations. They could handle the 360 and PS3 ports and fix the PC version. It wouldn't hurt to hunt around for some talent to get the game off the road.

Yeah I agree with that much, Bethesda's QA is shoddy, though on the other hand with Skyrim they've been quite responsive with the fixes we're requesting, it wasn't so long ago that our tech support issues were mostly ignored.

Are you sure that 360 and PS3 are the ports? The low Textures (for 2011 PC standards) and the 360Controler designed interface let me think that PC and PS3 are ports.

I think the solution is to have Creation Engine SDK and compensate independant developers for fixing engine issues like shadow performance.

This has nothing to do with the PCTech support forum.
