help with weird graphical glitches

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 3:10 am

So, I am currently building a new computer with the power to run Skyrim at high-ultra settings but I was hoping to get a head start using my current rig - unfortunately, I keep getting weird texture glitches (and the occasional CTD)\

By this, I mean that there are often holes in objects where a texture should clearly be and/or textures that stretch *out* of where they should be off into infinity.

My dxdiag output is below:

Your GFX card is just far too old and doesn't have enough Vram.

@Paingiver, not helpful - especially considering it is listed in the "unofficial will-my-pc-run-skyrim" thread hardware guide in the Medium to Low-Medium Levels section.

Paingiver is telling you what you don't want to hear. But he isn't wrong. Since you've said nothing about your game settings, 3rd party software, temperatures, Skyrim version #, and as I see it a gpu driver version that is years (?) out of date, then a quick assessment is that your:

GFX card is just far too old and doesn't have enough Vram.

I've had this glich show up agout 5 times in 350hrs of game time. Thinking Oh Nooo's! computer melt down. Nope. Temps fine 50c on gfx cards and 40c on CPU cores. All temps ok. Last time this happend, I looked it over. Seems to come from 1 corrupted point. Very rare bugg. It was clearly at the point 2 cells came together.

Simple fix is to exit and re enter. Or save and reload if that fails. Running Ultra, with AA turned down to 4x. Solid 60fps

Could see how this game could realy mess with a computer. It run's at about 80% on my CPU and 70% on the GFX cards. Only thing i've run, that will push a higher demand, on this computer. Is prime95 or a beanch mark tool, like Heaven.

I turn nothing off in the back ground. So good chance the bugg is from something the computer is doing at the time. That has nothing to do with the game.

From what I can see. This new engine is ready for some epic modds.

Your CPU is fine... Core I5 or I7 would be better... with Vista or Win7... (Lean towards Win-7... Vista is dead and abandoned. Win7 is finally surpassing XP machines. Vista never got more than 12% of the whole OS market, and is down to about 5% now.)

Your "NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GS"... is the culprit... Get a $60 upgrade to a NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT with 1GB vram, and your problems will fade-away.
Comparison... (Note your card is NOT DX10 compliant, only DX9... Part of the issue is DX10's version of DX9 code... not using true DX9 dlls on vista.)
http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=382&card2=575

It is a floating-point error.

Check your cards optimizations... Optimized for "speed" will cause more floating-point errors, and more vertex and texture glitches. Same with z-sorting...

You said you are trying to run on ULTRA on a card that you indicated was in the LOW-MEDIUM range... That is your problem. Not enough memory to hold the full floating-points and uncompressed textures. Your card is forcing compression, ignoring the games actual requests for full-quality. (Skyrim also does compression, when it is "Full". Your HD textures will not display as far.. less trees show, less decals, less particles... Even if you pick HIGH or ULTRA. The frames fall below "normal" (less than 30FPS) and the game starts to degrade itself, to keep it running above the "Lowest desired value" of about 12 FPS, which makes it run back above 30FPS, with glitches.)

One more to say, you need more video horsepower. The 7800GS was a great card, back when Oblivion came out. I used to have one and ran Oblivion on that card. It just does not have enough memory to run this game. Unless you dial down most of the graphics. Set it to Low and add a bit at at time until it screams.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear... I *am* running on low settings, NOT on ultra... as in "as low as everything will go" and I still get the texture problems. Also, I have another computer built around the same motherboard, but with a slower CPU and a 7600 GT gpu, that runs Skyrim at totally playable fps (again, with everything turned down)

Keep in mind, I'm already in the process of building the new computer - but I don't want to rush/cut corners with the new rig AND I'd like to be able to run it on the computer that's acting up... just looking for ideas, starting to think some piece of hardware is borderline...

Oh yeah, and in regards to the seriously outdated drivers, as reported by dxdiag... that makes no sense, I just recently upgraded to the most current WHQL drivers (285.62 iirc) ?!?

that is odd...did you do the full driversweep/safeboot etc method to install? Also, consider the newer beta drivers...they are more Skyrim friendly ;)
