Graphical glitches and unkillable Alduin

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 4:21 am

Have any of you guys the problem that Alduin can't be killed on the top of the world when you recieve Dragonrend? No matter how many ebony arrows I put in him or hit him with my sword, he takes no damage.
Secondly in the mission when you go for the Staff of Magnus the graphical of the wrights drops their texture and only show the grid/model frame.

Here is some pictures to show it.
It came with 1.4.21.4

I am playing on the Xbox but I have experienced the Alduin bug that you mentioned. Would I be right in thinking that the first time you met Alduin, he took damage. But you were killed during the fight and after you reloaded the autosave, you found Alduin takes no damage? The problem is that when you first meet Alduin, there is a cut-scene active where Alduin is talking and cannot be attacked/killed. An autosave then occurs, then the cut-scene ends and he can then be attacked (i.e. he can now take damage). However, when you reload from the autosave, for some reason the part of the cut-scene that enables Alduin to take damage, doesn't trigger. Thus, that particular autosave is broken and will always result in Alduin not being able to take damage. As far as I know, there is no way to fix that particular autosave but to reload the next prior savegame and continue from there (maybe there is a console command?). When you do that, you should find Alduin works again. Note that when you do that, look for the autosave to happen again, then wait a couple of seconds and then manually save. This will allow you to have a savegame during the Alduin fight that gets past the bug.

As for the Draugr, that graphical effect is actually intentional and not a bug. You will also find that the weapons these particular Draugr drop have a unique name (I forget what they are called but they drain stamina) and have the same graphical effect to identify them as being different to the weapons that normal (textured) Draugr drop.

I think the the developers should have also have given these particular 'etheral' draugr a different name, like they did with the weapons they carry. It would have prevented this confusion.

Happened to me too like Slick said above. I had autosave disabled to I was suprised to see the game autosaving the first time. Pro Tip: Save Before Starting the Event in the Future :D

the thing about Alduin.....

DO NOT read this spoiler ...IF you do you will get spoiled. This is to help the OP.
Spoiler
That is not where i killed him. It was very different for me...You have to read the Scroll, then something else happens. read what is being told to you in the Quest log. Trying not to spoil things for you..
I ran into Alduin at different locations but he is not killable ...
When at top of the world ..you will notice a swirling , sparkly spot...read the Elder scroll there...

Trying not to spoil anything for anyone...DO NOT Read that if you haven't done any of this!!

Thanks for the tip slick, I did go back to an earlier save to fix it, so no big deal that way for my. But kinda stupid bug I hope they fix..
This is my second char I do this mission with, but I couldn't remember to have seen these wireframe creatures before.

No problem. It would be nice if Bethesda fixed this Alduin bug because it can be a game breaker if players aren't aware of what is going on. Whilst the fight with Alduin isn't particularly difficult, the danger of falling off the cliff to your death is much greater (the player spends so much time looking upwards, you forget where the edge of the cliff is!). So, if the player doesn't beat Alduin the first time, you are likely to experience this 'invincible Alduin' bug which can ruin the game.
