Supporting a family in Skyrim?

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 8:49 am

I know quite a few of you like the most realistic playstyles (no fast traveling, eat food every day, get sleep)...

So would you guys like the option of having kids in the game? You would have to go out and get gold by any means than use that gold to support your family by buying food and such.

Maybe your kids would get older and they can eventually become a companion in combat?

Thoughts?

Would be amazing, but I think the growing up part is impossible to implament...

Secondly, the scripting would be so hard to do! By scripting I don't mean lines/quotes/speech etc.

No because people are complaining saying TES is slowly becoming like Fable. In my honest opinion, it's more of a gimmick then anything else and they had it in, I wouldn't use it.

Wouldn't your children have to grow up in game time?

Shouldn't this be in the mods forum? ;)

If "supporting your family" is realistic, then so is "your family supporting YOU". All the threads on this topic (and yes there are a few) seem to assume that a) the player is male, and B) the male is the breadwinner. And the rest of the family are pretty much domestic slaves.

I would say that a realistic family would represent a variety of models of family relations, including one where your spouse has a successful career and gives YOU stuff, and one where your kids are no-good rascals who run off and join the thieves guild, and so on ;)

Would be amazing, but I think the growing up part is impossible to implament...

Impossible to implement? Why? There are dozens of games that do something like this. GRADUAL aging would be hard, yes... and very few if any games do THAT... but age stages like infant/toddler/child/teen is no problem.

Time is a real issue, it's true... to pull it off you'd really have to play fast and loose with the game clock, which is what other games that implement this sort of thing do.

As for the scripting being hard to do, there have been plenty of mods that do much harder things for the earlier games in this series :)

The biggest problem with having kids in a TES game is that not enough time passes for it to be viable. So unless it does something stupid like rapid aging or suddenly skips months or years, kids really aren't possible. And I'd be more than happy to not have children if it means they don't implement those two things.

Considering that the children of skyrim are all loud mouthed little brats, who would want to come home to that. :shakehead:

I think something like actually providing food/money/clothes for your 'significant other' would be interesting. Rather than them just being there and mysteriously living forever while you're away even though they don't do anything... at least be able to give them some money so it's like "hey, here's money so you don't have to find a job" not "hey, you don't eat or work. how do you survive?"

I don't know who you married in the game, but my wife opened the store and gives me spending money when I stop by the house. Who knows how much money she's keeping for herself.

Eh, having kids would be alright. But I'd really just prefer to be able to adopt one or two from that orphanage.... Matches my super Good generous type characters more...... And that type of character actually makes up the bulk of my characters. I like being the Paladin type or any other good character really.... Sometimes I play Neutral, but I can't play evil characters without getting bored.... Got a little off topic, but again... I'd just like to be able to adopt children.

You need to be supported by your family,..

While you're basicly a dragon-slaying demigod?

I play games to escape my family. Why would I want a virtual one?

I don't know, the chance to have an awesome Altmer/Race hybrid kid who can help me in my magic lab sounds sufficiently different to me to set it apart from IRL. Plus the better half and said kid could watch over me while I sleep during the day (vampire and all - I know day doesn't hurt to bad in Skyrim, but RP) and protect me from any vampire hunters (the game will need some of those) that come to do me in... I would just have to teach them to fight a bit bit (I assume you could dedicate some time to your family, kind of like training.

Yeah, I like the idea. But ultimately I am of the opinion:

1. This is a RPG.
2. Having options (when well implemented) in an RPG is a good thing.
3. Presumably if you didn't want to follow this route in the game you wouldn't have to.

Eh, having kids would be alright. But I'd really just prefer to be able to adopt one or two from that orphanage.... Matches my super Good generous type characters more...... That sounds really good.

I would have liked the option of becoming Honorhall Orphanage patron or something - putting money, improving it, hiring good staff etc.

I like to think they are like the toys from Toy Story. The moment I can't see them they are throwing massive parties and eating like pigs.
