What should I upgrade? : V

Hi! I really want to play Skyrim on my laptop. I'm able to play it but it just lags way too much that it's practically unplayable. I'm very clueless about hardware, so please help me on what I should upgrade (and to what)... my only request is that it's not too heavy on the pocket. I don't want anything "too much", just an upgrade that will allow me to play the game and enjoy it! It's generally pretty much impossible to upgrade more than the RAM in a laptop, I'm afraid. You might need to buy a new desktop (which would be more powerful & cheaper) or laptop.

The processor you have just barely meets the minimum specs, but the graphics is just an Intel, which is not supported at all...

Your problems are two fold for you, sorry.
- Older generation CPU which only just meets the specs for the game.
- A gfx card which clearly doesn't meet the specs, since it's one of intels chipset/intergrated range.

Laptops are not easy to upgrade and some parts just can't be done. The parts which under spec are those which can't be upgraded.

So your options are new PC or Laptop. An upgrade to parts won't help you, it's an entirely new system only.
If you wish to consider that, let us know a budget and also a preference to Laptop or PC.

Unfortunately, I don't have a budget at all to buy a new PC or Laptop.

I was hoping I could upgrade my gfx card and that it could help. The service center told me I could (was he wrong?)... I only have a 150USD budget, but the parts I'm looking at are secondhand anyway

Upgrading a laptop with a new graphics card? It's not a simple single component upgrade like a desktop PC.

The Inspiron 1440 did come with the option of intel integrated or a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 with 512 MB of graphics memory. That is the upgrade you "could" have.

An upgrade would mean replacing the entire system board (many parts all in one), if you can find someone willing to do that for cheap, well done.
For 150 USD, I don't know. Since that won't be easy, labor costs will take up most of it.
However it might be more cost effective in long term to get a new one when you can afford it, since that is a lot of money for a relatively small upgrade.

Dell was one of the rare companies that for some models (think "deLuxe", high dollar) would accept the laptop back to the factory for a rebuild, but at a rather steep cost. As already commented, both the system board (equivalent to a desktop's mainboard or "motherboard") and any current graphics card would be removed and completely replaced. AFAIK, they discontinued doing so about three or four years ago.

I wasn't sure it was still something they still did or not. I'm from England, the OP is clearly from america, so corporate protocols on these things could be quite different.
You never know, a small PC repair shop might have the necessary second hand parts sitting around, but it would be a long shot, the system board isn't exactly something well known for surviving long time. That specific model I think 2-3 years old now.

laptops are the cheap mans computer solution..

they love svcking in people to buy them only to tell them that what they bought is what they are stuck with.

Like mentioned above, ram is about all you can upgrade typically aside from the hardrive...
