Not 100% but it may be caused by the anti-aliasing implementation you're using. Try turning off AA (including FXAA) altogether and see if you still see the problem.

It has annoyed me from day one... first it was said that it was some AA & transparency issue, but it also happens without any AA, so I guess that's not the case.

edit: here is a picture of my character standing in front of the whiterun gate at daytime without aa, and yet the corona is visible. Aplying any aa to this will ofcourse still show the outline.

and zoomed in a bit:

oh one more edit:

I noticed that on many such occasions it looks like the character was AA-ed to the unshaded background, and then the shadow was applied afterward, making the thin outline out of tone.

It's the way they do the shadows.

odd.... did you modify your INI file manually?

have you tried to delete your INI files in the documents/my games/skyrim folder and then let skyrim auto detect and then try without any FSAA applied.

What video card are you using.

Have you tried setting defaults in your video cards settings?

Did you make any .ini adjustments to the shadows?

I get the same white outlines on my character as well. I have edited shadow options in the ini file, such as shadow resolution, shadow mode. Im trying to get rid of the outline though, if I find a solution I'll let ya all know. Gonna go back through the ini file, trying one thing at a time.

If you go into options - advanced in the launcher and check FXAA it eliminates the white outlines. I have gotten this from day one with my ATI HD 5770 card. This doesn't seem to have a big effect on system performance.

I got the pictures from the vanilla game, unedited ini's, no AA , no FSAA, so it's there all the time. Nvidia control panel options: high qualy and clamp, that's all, but even at def settings there I got it.

So it's the way the character is drawn, blending into the unshaded background, and then the shadow is applied to that background. (leaving the char with a noticeable edge)

edit: typo, small addition

the only thing I have done to the shadows is installing the "Shadow Striping fix" mod

Yeah well at least it's not just me or you... there have been posts before about this, but many people don't seem to notice it. To be fair, it only occurs in certain conditions, and it's certainly no gamestopper, but as it goes with annoyances, once they start, there is no looking the other way, it's like it goes worst every time...

I've tried a few things, but to no avail, still there. I will say this though, I use nvidia and the last certified drivers they released were Oct. 24th. and Skyrim released 11/11/11. Been nothing but beta drivers since the game was released. Maybe a proper driver will fix it.

It's not gamebreaking, but once you see it, cant help but notice it.
