Weird texture problem

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 2:19 am

Just take a look at the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92uGNeg-fnU

This is happening with 100% stock Skyrim. Patch 1.4 or whatever Steam is currently on.

My hardware:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE 4GHz
8GB DDR3
2x cfx HiS IceQ X Turbo Radeon HD 6950 2GB

Never see something like that, you check your temps?

Yeah, my CPU was around 45, and both video cards were about 60-70. Very cool temps.

It's really bizarre, right? It's like it's switching between two sets of textures. I really am at a loss of what to do since I'm running vanilla Skyrim...

are you running adaptive AA? if you are - try another AA method and see if that fixes it.

Turn off Crossfire if you're using it. It is not compatible with Skyrim yet. There is a driver update on the way but until then you're stuck with 1 card.

The problem persists with crossfire disabled. Also, ATI added crossfire support for Skyrim in December, I think.

I have "use application settings" for everything in the CCC.

First thought was "lack of VRAM" but 2 Gig should be enough. Weird!

I've seen the same effect on calisto's house, and I'm on nvidia, so rest assured that it is the game, and not your setup. It seems like there is 2 textures fighting for the same bit of surface. (when you stand in front of said house, it's a small patch right of the door, you can spot by moving in&out)

Have you tried deleting all your .ini files (in your documents folder and in the game folder) and letting the game regenerate them? If you back up you old files make sure they don't have the .ini extension or the game will pick those up too.

Yeah, I actually deleted all my configuration files and the entire Skyrim folder. I even moved my save folder out and tried this with a clean new game.

This makes no sense! >_<

Do you have the high res texture pack installed? I've seen weird texture issues with the texture pack.

From your video, it looks like the high res textures are competing with the original low res textures.

If nothing works I'd try deleting the game from Steam entirely and redownloading, minus the texture pack.

Try verifying cache integrity? to me it looks like some LOD fighting for render frames.

Are you running any addition applications in the background that modify memory usage?

If you have a friend with the same video card. You can try swapping the video cards out. If the problem goes away then it's something hinky with your hardware.

Tried this once, but it seems the high res DLC downloads automatically now. I've disabled the .esps for them, but no luck.

Verified, and nothing came up. Also, I've tried with each card individually now and the problem stays.

Bump. It seems I cannot install Skyrim without the HD texture pack anymore. With a 100% stock (except the official texture pack) I am still having this problem.

I think you just need to move the 2 .bsa and 2 .esp files for the texture pack out of the data folder in the skyrim root folder to remove the texture pack.

I just tried that, and it's still happening! This is really aggravating.

It's looking increasingly like it may be a problem with your graphics card / drivers then. Have you tried older drivers?

Haven't tried older drivers. The weird thing is, I've had these same drivers/cap since 1.4/hd textures came out and I didn't have the problem at first.

I doubt the cards are failing. There are no other graphical errors in Skyrim, or in any other game I use. Everything else is functioning exactly as it's supposed to.

I'm on the verge of reinstalling windows to see if that fixes it. But I'm ordering a new CPU in a week or so, and I'm just going to wait until then. Don't want to reformat twice in two weeks. Guess I'll have to do with no Skyrim until then...

I get this if I use Adaptive MsAA in the CCC. If I switch to simple MsAA it's gone and everything is back to normal.

EDIT: It works good with Super Sample AA for me too, only the Adaptive MsAA gives me the bug.

Well this is weird. I had tried making a profile earlier where I set the AA mode to multi, and no luck. So I deleted the custom profile and used the default one. This time I made another profile with multi on, and the problem kept happening, so I killed the CCC process and restarted it and bam, it works.

Interestingly, a reboot didn't solve that problem which it should have. I think something is wrong with my CCC.

Hmm, I don't use profiles...so I really don't know what's up with them. If I want to change something I go into the CCC and make the changes in the "3d application settings"
Maybe you should try a clean re-install of your drivers. Uninstalling everything related to ATI CCC before. That's what I do every time I update the drivers.

Anyway, glad you got it working, that thing is very annoying! But it's clearly CCC related and not the game.

Does anyone know why Adaptive MsAA in the CCC gives this?
