"hardcoe" character creation options

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 2:31 pm

I'm using self-imposed restrictions on the skills my characters use, but I'd really like to see "hardcoe" options during character creation, for example:

No Magicka - It would be great, whie playing a pure Thief or Warrior type to have no spells at all and no Magicka displayed on screen. Sure, I can choose not to cast spells, but I'd prefer them to just not be there at all.
A choice of only ONE of Alchemy, Enchanting or Blacksmith.
Armour limitation. Heavy only, Light only, Cloth only.
Weapon restrictions.
And, of course - Dead is Dead. With a big warning and several "Yes, I understand, I won't complain when my character dies!" confirmation buttons.

There could be more, but that's a good start.

Note - these would be choices, not enforced on any character and with no associated bonuses to encourage players to choose them if they didn't really want to. More for role-playing and for players who can't resist creating incredibly powerful characters but then find the combat a bit easy.

Playing a stealth character, I'm completely avoiding magic, smithing and enchanting. Even with sneak maxed out, the game is never so easy that I feel overpowered. I know that I could create some incredible gear, but I'd rather not do that... although I could. What would be nice is if I was able to choose these restrictions as permanent options at character creation.

If anyone is working on a Mod to do this sort of thing at character creation, I'd love to know about it!

The options have to be so wide and varied as to make it a pointless exercise. Some hardcoe roleplayers like to eat and sleep, while others go further and calculate the likely possible carrying weight. Most players take bits and pieces of what they enjoy to make their character a reality.

You're telling a story, and you NEED the freedom for occasioanl poetic licence, rather than the developers telling you how to do it.

We don't need developers to tell me how to roleplay.. you just concentrate on a wide and varied and enjoyable game world... leave the character to me.

Also as mentioned, enforced dead is dead would be a nightmare.. I'd be more scared of bug deaths than real death.. the game is too complex to allow for it.... exactly as before.. you need poetic licence in Dead is Dead so that you know its okay to reload a save, because the game bugged you stuck in a cliff.

I'd like to see race and class based limits i.e. Altmer can have higher INT, WIS and magic skills/lower combat skills, Nords can have higher strength/lower speed, Redguards can have higher combat skills/lower intelligence.

[i]Roleplay that you lost the use of your left arm in a logging accident, and thus can't use anything on it. That means nothing that can be held in the left hand.

And forgo weapons altogether. Just use your single fist. With no armor. And then put all your level-up points in Magicka (which you will never use) keeping your health and stamina at 100. And play on Master Difficulty.

A great feature, that completely changed how you played New Vegas. Would definitely like to see this in Skyrim.

Ok, forget "dead is dead" as that seems to be slightly derailing the point of the additional options and could be annoying due to bugs.

All I want are a few class limitations that are choices during character creation. Extended roleplaying details like "I've lost the use of an arm" are not part of this.

I'm not suggesting anything is forced on players, just that a few optional toggles can be set during character creation, for example "No Magic or Magicka", "No Heavy Armour", etc. High level stuff that is pretty much standard in RPG character creation and was a significant part of character creation in the first few Elder Scrolls games.

The "Eating and sleeping each day" idea could be added as an option, but I found this to be ultimately rather annoying and distracting in F:NV. Personal choice, but I'd be avoiding that one.

Redguards wouldn't have lower intelligence in ES V. They have bonuses in Alteration and Destruction. But besides that I like that idea.

i like the idea of hardcoe options. thing is, you gotta keep it simple. eat/sleep, no quest markers, that sort of thing; no one is ever to agree on anything more general than that for a role-playing option; other things you just have to do yourself. skill limitations might work... maybe. dead is dead will never fly though lol. only in the world of table top is the game stable enough to support that as a "forced" mode of play. its such a hardcoe option anyway; the people who use it should have the willpower to follow through.

I pretty much agree with everything except dead is dead, because I would never get anywhere if I had to keep starting over every ten minutes.

The only problem I see with this otherwise is that it would limit some of the quests you could do and factions you could join. No magicka means no College, etc,

Well my warrior just never touched magic at all, not intentionally limiting myself, just didn't want to use magic, and I still can't enter the college, lol. I'm about 10 magicka short for the spell she wants me to cast at the gate. :(

Quite a few good suggestions in here. I'd love to see that "Eat, Drink & Sleep"-Thing in future patches, just as an hardcoe-mode. Loved it while I was playing Fallout.

Anyway, I'm playing on Master too and my focus is alchemy. So I'm limiting myself for at least max. 15 pieces of a every ingredient (last character had like... 200 red flowers in his little Backpack).
Makes it a little more realistic.

This

Sleep once for at least six hours.

Eat three times a day.

I found playing FO:NV (yes yes YES I know it isn't a Bethesda game, but it's still awesome) much more immersive on hardcoe mode
