CTD with HD Texture pack with strong computer

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 6:12 pm

My rig is as follows

i7 980 extreme
12gb ddr3
Windows 7 64 bit
asus rampage 3 extreme motherboard
2 x GTX 570 HD with 2560mb of ddr 5 each in SLI
Asus xonar Essence STX Audio card
2 x 60gb ssd's in raid 0 config for OS boot drive
2 x 1tb wd hardives in raid 0 for game drive

water cooled with lot of case fans for keeping temps ultra low

ABSOLUTELY no overclocking! have never had a need too with this rig.

After loading the HD texture pack i get a repeatable CTD when leaving whiterun and coming up to a soldier walking along the road. It crashes everytime. I have verified with EVGA precision that at that time my graphics cards are only at 48% load and a lil over a gig in video ram being used. I play at Ultra settings and have never seen it drop below 60fps. It does not go higher than 60 fps due to v-sync.

when I restart Skyrim after the crash without HD pack selected I dont get any crash at all. The funny thing is tho that If I disable SLI and run it on 1 card with everything on ultra and HD pack loaded the crash does not happen.

My question is.. Has anyone or does anyone know of ay compatibility issues with the HD texture pack and SLI setups???

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I Honestly believe that my rig should be able to handle these settings with the HD pack without breaking a sweat. Before the crash o ccurs everything is running buttery smooth and than bam.

There is a known bug with the naming of some textures and folders. Luckily a fix is available http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=8236. Please read the instructions carefully. This should fix the crashes.

I spent the first day with the HD tecture packs. Game was running great upto that point. Had a major bug show up. Running my EVGA precision tool and a few other programs. To let me know how the cumputer was doing. LoL'z. 98% demand on card #2 and normal 60% demand on card #1. after a few min the fan speeds would start to rise.

Could not fig it out. So i shut down all the tools and just ran the game to enjoy the new look. But no rise in fan speed. Alt Tab'd out and started up the tools. Both card was at 60%. Every thing was running great.

So I ran more test. Seems a lot of program's now with the HD texture pack's running will upset the SLI setup. this includes the Steam browser. But not the Steam overlay. This must be a driver conflict. none of the program tools demand any real resources from the system. The worst one ATM is fraps. Its never given me any problims in the past.

For now. I just make shure I close the Steam browser be for I start the game. If i need to check then i just start the tools after I start-up the game.

ATM I have 4 tools I use. That clearly conflict with (Skyrim + HD tec paks + ultra settings. Someone posted they had a water ripple problim. If I run Fraps. I get the same glitch. But with Frap's not running my water ripples look just fine.

When I did the 1.4 pach beta. With a new toone I had a odd CtD going into Dawnstar. I could FT to Dawnstar. But as soon as I started to walk into town. Boom crash to desktop. I ended up going right up to the point I would crash. Then I rested 24 hours. Hehe Lol's. The hard drives went crazzy for about a min or two. So I just left the computer and got myself a cup of coffee. Came back. moved forward. Cool no CtD.

I could see the guy at the museum spawned. I had just activated the quest just before I traviled to Dawnstar. Seems i read a few notes in my inventory just before I FT. The next thing was 3 thugs spawn and try to kill me. Clearly with a high end computer. We are able to move around in the game faster then the game can ajust.

My SLI rig is running without an problims. But I also spent a few weeks tunnig it after I built it. The old days of just OC'ng a CPU or GFX card is in the past.

Mods?

I've been running the HRTP for a while now without any crashes or slowdowns. I don't use many mods, however.

I forgot to say. If its a CtD with a gaurd."not the guard you find around the broken down wagon". good chance its a bounty issue. Maybe try punching a poor NPC in town. Pay your 40 gold fine and see if this clears the CtD. Also if it is a bounty issue. the gaurd would want to say "I know you" so good be a sound glitch or issue with your sound card. Skyrim can can be a bit demanding about the sound settings.

Just as an update. the earlier crash was nothing to do with bounty as i had no bounty at the time with this fresh character. I decided to see what happens if I just wait and let the guard walk towards me rather than go towards the guard. I got no crash!! and was able to continue down the road crash free, I have been playing for hours now without a ctd and have tried to tax my system by rapidly moving my camera around in different areas indoors and outdoors with lots of scenry to render. still no crash.. Let you guys know if i come acroos another CTD.
