HEy guys,

I enjoy messing with my INI, and while trying out some new settings, I've lsot the ability to enable FXAA. ever. in any way. I've deleted or restored every .ini associated with skyrim, i've gone through every nvidia control panel, i've gone so far as to use the nvidia inspector tool. I had this problem long ago, and jsut happened to recently have the chance to re-enable fxaa after uninstalling a realistic lighting mod. I lost it affter i moved my INI to allow skyrim to write one for itself to reset the settings.

I also use Nexusmodmanger on occasion and i launch from a desktop shortcut to SKSE script extender

Is this a common issue?

This just got stranger. I forced 16x AA and MSAA in the Nvidia control panel and saw a HUGE vram usage increase. I usually run around 920 megs of Vram usage, and forcing this shot it into using 1gb of system ram

Odd thing is, it looked no different. The jaggies were everywhere, but the performance still took a huge hit!

Driver update, no dice. Can't see the effects of anty sort of anti aliasing no matter the settings. Still see the performance hit, though.

I can think of two things you might try: verify the integrity of you Skyrim cache-
1. Right click on the game in the Steam library and select Properties
2. Navigate to the "Local Files" tab
3. Click "Verify integrity of game cache"
if that doesn't help, run DXDIAG on your system. Maybe there is a DirectX DLL which is missing or corrupted. You might try re-installing SKSE, if some of the dll files it installs got deleted or corrupted it could cause problems. If deleting all your .ini files and letting Skyrim rebuild them didn't help, and if only Skyrim is affected you might end up having to delete your local content and re-install Skyrim. Back-up your save files elsewhere just in case.

Full re-install, new drivers. Still no way to see any sort of anti aliasing

If your using the 295.51 drivers, FXAA is disabled in them. You'll wanna use 290.53 if you want FXAA in Skyrim.

I'm currently on 290.53 and can't get AA of any kind within the game.

I'm on the latest verions.

The odd part is that i have had it work once or twince in the past, only to lose it during an ini tweak or similar. Uninstalling it, wiping ALL of my skyrim data in both directories had no effect. When i crank AA forcing to max, i get the huge performance hit but 0 visual difference (And i'm not blind, i've used AA before and know what to look for ).

Anyone have experience being able to force AA from the control panel for nvidia? I'm a few frustrations away from a re-formatting here

If the problem is caused by an .ini file tweak, then a new unmodified .ini generated by the game should have fixed it. If it's caused by files left by a mod, then a clean install of Vanilla Skyrim should have fixed it. If it's in the settings for your card, I would expect other games to have problems too.

The fact that it worked in the past when you removed a mod leads me to believe that the problem is something installed by a mod. I haven't used them, but I've read that some of the graphical effect mods place direct x files in the Skyrim directory. Something along the line of "d3d9.dll". This allows their program to run, and the local version of directx they installed will take priority over your computer's installation of directx. When you ran DXDIAG it checks your computer's installation of directx and finds no problems. If you re-installed Skyrim, and removed all of the folders for Skyrim to make sure all files added by any mods were removed- and then ran Skyrim from the launcher and let it build new .ini files without re-installing any mods and FXAA wont work, then I would have to say the problem is in your Video card's settings. I haven't had an Nvidia card for many years so I don't know if you have a button for returning the card to factory default settings. Perhaps the help sections at Nvidia's website may show other people who have had the same problem and found solutions there.

Make sure your skyrimprefs.ini is NOT set to read only.

Also what res are you running at? at 1080p 4xAA enabled in game should be good (2x to 4x is a huge difference, 4x to 8x not so much)

You didn't by any chance, use the saveini console command, did you? But on the other hand, if you had, you'd notice it. In most occasions I used it, the cosmetic models on the loading screens turned purple...

Anyways, make sure you haven't forced the driver to "override any application setting" (on the game's profile). If this is the case, revert back to "application controlled", or simply use the "restore" option.

And finally, if everything seems to be in order but you still don't see AA working, reinstall the driver, go for a customized installation and when the option "perform a clean install" shows up, use it.
