I Lag pretty bad indoors. Any idea why?

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 9:16 pm

So yeah for some reason my screen feels rather choppy in houses. I'm testing it in Riverwood, outside as I move my mouse it feels smooth and I get anything from about 80 - 100 fps. I get the same fps indoors but still it looks choppy when I move my mouse. Does anyone know why this is happening it's really annoying me.

I play on 1920x1080 - ultra - Full AA and AF everything in advanced options is left as it is in the ultra preset.

Thanks

Try lowering your shadows from Ultra to high.

You sure? I get good fps indoors. (Update - I tried changing it to high and there is still noticeable choppyness compared to outdoors. Hardly much difference between ultra and high other than I get like 100 - 110 fps indoors now instead of 85 - 100)

Nah I have a GTX 580, I would expect outside to be alot more choppy but no... even the smallest area in a house is far from smooth even though I have like 85 fps minimum.

Same issue here, using a 5970. Thought at first it might be a multi gpu thing, but apparently not. It only happens in first person though, third person isn't affected at all strangely enough. And also only if you use fullscreen, windowed is fine.
It can happen outside as well. It's really weird, my fps are locked at 60 (v-sync) when this happens, there's no framedrop at all.

Here are some other threads on the same issue:

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1653449
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/115099-25-skyrim-stuttering-firstperson-view

Some suggested using windowed mode all the time with that borderless windowed mod. But that didn't help stability or performance here.
Others said to use a FPS limiter, and while those do fix the issue they introduce some drop in performance.

Hope this gets sorted out by bethesda cause it's pretty annoying

I've got to say for me it's almost like unsmooth screen tearing. I'll try it in 60 hz and report back.

I'm having the exact same problem, it almost feels like my mouse is snapping to a grid when I'm indoors and in first person view (although it does happen outdoors too, just not as bad), but my FPS never drops below 60.

I tried the FPS limiter found on the nexus and that fixed the problem but introduced extreme screen tearing. I tried forcing vsync on with Catalyst but that didnt seem to do anything.

Another thing i discovered while playing around with the CK is that it only seems to happen in areas with a light source, i made an interior cell with no lightsource and my aiming was buttery smooth.

I'm using an ATI 5870, latest drivers.

I tried the FPS limiter bundled with MSI afterburner beta and this seems to have fixed the issue for me without introducing a drop in performance.

Perhaps the thread getting mouse inputs is locked to 60 times a second and nothing more? I dare to say that things like that are harder to notice in 3rd person.

I would try the Skyrim Borderless window mod:http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=4

It solved stuttering for me (Ultra everything, 4xAA (to make everything smoother)). I used to gag a lot both inside and out, even without my frames dropping, and the window sorted it out. You can't even see the difference.
I have the same rez, and the same settings besides the 4xAA, so you should check it out. :

Same problem here on both Radeon 5870 1GB and Nvidia 580 3GB.

Basically, you have 60 frames, you walk past and look at a flame/lightsource (indoors) and the game stutters and feels like your FPS is very low (30ish) even though the FRAPS counter says your frames have not dropped below 60. Its not a FPS issue because the frames aren't dropping. Please read on, I want to solve this, already did half:

With the Radeon 5870: Playing in a fullscreen window using Simple Borderless Window mod fixed the problem entirely, woohoo... but

I upgraded to a Nvidia 580 and playing in windowed mode is not really an option. I've found on the Nvidia, when playing in windowed mode my mouse becomes stuttery and sometimes the left and right button don't respond if I go below about 55 frames, which happens sometimes in tree areas. So, I have to play fullscreen.

Does anyone know what causes strange stuttering in windowed mode on my Nvidia card when my frames stray below 60?

Okay nevermind, fixed it.

Forcing v-sync through the Nvidia Control Panel sorted it, but made the mouse even more unresponsive than usual.

So, disabled V-sync completely and used dxtory to limit frames to 59. I used to do this on my Radeon before I discovered windowed mode. Windowed mode was better because it didn't require having a strange Japanese program installed and running in the background all the time, but windowed mode just doesn't like my Nvidia for some reason, so Dxtory it is. At least the issue is solved.
