Horrible screen flickering...pretty unplayable...since day 1

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 6:20 am

I have been all over the internet with this issue and have not been able to find something that works permanently. I am going to post what I posted at another forum since I don't want to spend unneeded time to resay everything I have already typed many times over,

"I'm not going to go into the many many hours I have spent downloading USER made fixes and mods. I am actually creating this thread to ask about a problem that I have had since day one.

I found a video on youtube with the same problem: watch?v=KD23g62zDIw

See the full screen flickering? It's like that, only worse. In the comments they mention an FPS limiter, which I did download and it did for work for about a week. Then yesterday, the problem just mysteriously came back. I went searching for another solution and tried various things from forums that people suggested based on if the issue sounded like mine. A big problem is that when I search for "flickering" or "flashing" inside of skyrim most of the results are pertaining to the shadow issue, not this full screen vhs tracking looking issue.
To fix the problem the first time I tried limiting the FPS to different amounts, but that never did anything. I then deleted those files and redownloaded them from skyrim nexus and this time it didn't fix the issue. Strangely, someone in the comments on a skyrim nexus mod mentioned a download link from another website that contained the EXACT same files as the ones I already had. I obviosly didn't think this would fix it as I had just tried these files, but oddly it did fix the issue...for about 24 hours. Now all of a sudden the issue is back. I just have no idea what is causing this and how I can fix it, permanently. Now I am here pleading for any suggestions, even if you think your suggestion is dumb, please help. I will very much appreciate it.
PC INFO:
Intel i5-2500k at about 4.3ghz
6GB RAM
nvidia geforce gtx 570
I've got the updated drivers as well, even beta released ones that are supposed to help issues with skyrim.

If you need anymore info, let me know."

from here, these were the main suggestions from these forums:

Update drivers
Force Vsync on with D3DOverrider
Reinstall drivers
Change your monitor's refresh rate
Mess around with the Nvidia CP settings
Video card overheating

I have tried all of these and nothing is working.

I'm at a dead end. Please someone help. I would very much appreciate it.

Post a DX diag, that should help us figure out what's wrong. I know for Windows XP you can get it from the "run" option under the start menu. Just type in "dxdiag" into the field, and when the windows come up, select the option to save all infomration, then copy/paste that.

I'm not sure if the process is the same for VIsta/Windows 7 Users, or if there's a similar option for macs and Linux users.

Fixed how please?

He means he fixed the fact you needed to scroll through a bunch of text from the DXdiag.

Anyway, just so you know, we haven't ignored you,... it's just that I'm not very computer-literate. All I *can* say is that it looks like there's no reason you should have problems playing this game. Someone more computer-literate may be able to help you further about the DXdiag.

By the way, did you check to see if your antivirus/spyware is up to date? Not sure if those progams can cause this kind of havoc... but hey, if a faulty soundcard can make Deadspace crash on the 4th level, despite it playing fine otherwise...

--EDIT--

Actually... wait. I may have something here, but it'll be expensive. You said the drivers temporarily fixed the problem, right? That means there *likely* is a problem with your videocard. If you have the money, I'd suggest you buy a new one (not top of the line model, unless you really like the high-quality settings. I'd suggest a Nvidia or ATI card that meets minimum requirements, but not much beyond that.)

Once you have it, stick it into your computer, go through the instillation stuff, and then try and boot up the game. If it's still fine after a few days then you can trash the old videocard (or return it if it's still under warrently.) If it's not... then it's probably time to take it a specialist and return the new videocard you bought.

The only reason I suggest this at all is because of your continuing problems despite all the help you are given and the fact that your computer exceeds the minimum requirements of the game.

No no no. The drivers didn't fix it temporarily. I downloaded some files that limited the fps in skyrim. It seemed to work for like a week. Plus, I play other intensive games (like bf3 maxed out) and I have no issues, so I'm thinking this is a skyrim issue...judging by the 24,000 other bugs that i've had to try and fix.

Yeah, sounds like your system is having a fit with Skyrim, then. My only suggestion now is to see if you can't trade it in for a 360 or PS3 version... or buy a new PC. Or wait and hope that when Bethesda releases a DLC for it, it gets fixed. But let's see if anyone more computer-literate than me have any suggestions.

So i was trying out the game again, I noticed this time that as the flickering got really bad my characters starting swimming....yes, swimming. Literally I could swim into the sky. The animation acted like he was in water and I could "fly" around by swimming...wtf.

If you've disable v-sync, try turning that back on. I didn't have this exact problem, but did have something very similar and re-enabling v-sync resolved it.
