Great Performance, but after sometime severe drops - Any ide

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 6:34 pm

Since the last 2 patches my game runs fast and crash free...however, i notice severe drops in performance after some time. These drops never happened to me with 1.1 or 1.2. For instance, i am getting about 40fps on the marketplace in Whiterun...but after some time it drops to 29.

Alt-tabbing will temporarily solve my problem. I heard that the +fullproc tweak also solves the issue for some...but since i rely on SKSE, i cant use that tweak unfortunately :(

By the way i am using ENB 0.96 and i am on 1.4.21 ;) So anyone who experienced this too and managed to fix it please tell me :)

I don't have a fix, but I have some suggestions (after spending a fair amount of time tweaking ENB myself).
  • First, Ambient Occlusion:
  • Turning this off will definitely improve performance, especially stuttering.
  • Also, if you have SSAO on in ENB, and "useindirectlight=true", you get better shadows at a fairly severe performance cost. Try turning it off and comparing.
  • How many textures do you have, and what's your maximum texture use in VRAM? If you're like me and installed 5 GB of 4096 & 2048 textures, you've surpassed your VRAM limit, and your GPU has to spend time swapping out from RAM, or worse, the hard disk. Note that 5 GB of textures != 5 GB of VRAM use, but in general, when you go overboard, you'll eventually surpass your video card's memory. If appropriate, try switching really hi-res textures for lower res versions.

I keep a close look at my VRAM and i am not exceeding my maximum limit. I do not use SSAO as that would kill performance ;)
No, usually i have great performance, but due to some memory leak or something after a certain time my fps will decrease severely...for no apparant reason.
Different ini settings also show no real improvement...

Did no one else experience this problem ???

Is it maybe, that my cpu throttles down due to excessive heat ? If it was true, then i find it a little hard to believe, as it was all fine in 1.1 and 1.2...

Don't forget the not so great AI. While we walk around in the gameworld, the AI is doing various calculations, controlling what to happen and the NPCs, based on various codelines intended to be control the gameworld. It's glitchy at best, and only simple instructions may work flawlessly, but once things get more complex or perhaps there are conflicting actions the AI want to perform, it overwhelms the game engine first, and then the CPU.
This is just my assumption though.

Well lets assume you are right, then others should experience this too, right ? Especially those with weaker cpus...
Also, why does alt-tabbing temporarily solve the problem ?

Alt, tab flushes your VRAM. If it's a memory leak there is not much you can do about it

So unless Bethesda fixes this, Everyone will have to live with it?

Are there any specific ini tweaks that can do something about it?

Update : Ok, i am not 100% sure, but maybe ENB 0.96 and its tweaks were the problem here. When i disabled ENB, i got the same framerate and no further drops, not even after 15 minutes...

Here is my enbpatch.ini (Maybe i did something wrong in there?) :

I'm not familiar with your version of ENB. Current versions are 102 & 103 (but most people still use 102).

One thing I've noticed that can hurt performance is the enb pre- and post-process effects (possibly bloom, too, but I haven't personally seen this), depending on the configuration. You could try swapping those out. For example, Confident ENB has very fast effects configuration. You could try downloading and comparing the performance version vs one of the other versions (it's ENB 102). If you can't run the performance config, then you might want to wait and see if Boris comes out with a more optimized alternative. He tried that with an experimental 105 release, but got upset at NVIDIA and, AFAIK, stopped development on it.

I'm not saying you should stick with Confident (unless you really like it), but if you're willing to invest the time, it would be worth installing and comparing performance.

ENB 0.96 didnt feature any visual enhancements on its own ;) It was just for performance.
In any case, these memory leak problems i described happened in Vanilla Skyrim ;)

When you say "after some time", can you be more specific? People have posted slow downs after several hours of play (which may indicate a memory leak or failure to flush a buffer), but if you're getting issues after 10 minutes, that's going to be different.

I would take a close look at the size of your save files. I too am having problems and i have it pin pointed down to this. At the time of posting this, my current save fille is at a whopping 58.3mb on a level 9 toon! i have re rolled 3 toons to make sure this was the issue and it is. That said, my latest toon is level 2, 23 mins of game time and that save file is already at 3.3mb. I don't know what to do now, found no solutions but im sure that is your problem. Can anyone shed some light on this utter nonsense of being limited to how far you progress before save file swells up.....?
