Armor choice for duel wielding melee character

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 9:06 pm

So I made a Redguard that duel wields swords and axes (depends on what weapons if find/make). I'm level 6 using light armor right now for mobility, can close the gap between ranged enemies quickly & dodge the attacks of warriors using 2-handed weapons.

It works well when fighting normal enemies like your wolves or bandits chiefs, but some stronger enemies can kill me in about 2 -3 hits if I'm not careful. Wanted to know if anyone has any experience using duel wielding characters and what armor they prefer and why. Was thinking about switching to heavy armor and using the steed stone, but I would like to get the stamina regen perk from the light armor tree.

Pure archer I'd say heavy, since stamina isn't that important. But dual wield power attacks gobble it up, plus being able to dodge and close the distance faster would be a plus, so maybe light. Not sure how max DR for light stacks up against that of heavy though, you take a lot of hits in melee.

I'm playing a dual-sword wood elf in light armor. So far, I've increased Health and Stamina evenly and have only spent perks in the light armor and one-handed trees. Stamina is clearly an extremely valuable resource for dual-wielding. As long as I have available stamina, fights are no problem, but once it runs out, my risk of death increases tremendously. Stick with light armor, IMO. You'll need the regen rate.

The extra regen would be nice... guess I'll use the lord stone and smithing to increase my resistance. Going 60/40 with my health and stamina right now, things do get tough when I run out of stamina, so I may stick with light.

Just checked out the UESP page on armor, apparently both light and heavy armors have the same armor cap (80%). You can hit that cap sooner with heavy armor, but with 100 level smithing and some +smithing enchanted gear, you can eventually hit the cap with light armor too.

WAIT!
The Lady guardian stone
Spoiler
...provides a 25% bonus to Health and Stamina regeneration. It may not sound like much but I have definitely noticed an improvement since I picked it. And if just this minor improvement made a difference, imagine what adding an additional 2x that bonus would do?

I think at lvl 6 you are overthinking it. Light armor will be fine, just pump those points into health and stamina. If you are doing smithing or enchanting then even better. Dual wielders are super effective with enough stamina. Don't gimp yourself by using drainy heavy armor...unless you want that sort of thing.

I prefer heavy, but light is easily doable.

Light armor + dual wield works very well, as some have suggested find ways to increase stamina regeneration and power attack everything dead before they can touch you. Since you are a Redguard, don't forget about Adrenaline Rush when dealing with crowds - it give you almost 1 minute of chain power attacks.

In the long run they both cap the Ar rating so it does not matter, in the short run light armor will probably cover you though it might get hairy in certain fights.

So far the light armor seems to be working well, looking forward to the stamina regen as using power attacks to stagger & kill tough enemies before they can do any serious damage helps.
Thanks for all the advice

Well since you like the stamina regen, I think you answered your own question, but personally I like Heavy Armor, just because I like heavy armor heavy combat better like Light Armor finesse combat.

There is really no practical reason to wear light armor (other than roleplaying). Sure, you can sprint longer for the first twenty or so levels, but the Conditioning perk makes heavy armor as good as light armor ever was.

You must be pretty "finesse" yourself if you need to hide behind 100 lbs of steel
