Game recording software

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 11:03 pm

I'm getting fed up with Fraps, I paid for it (a while ago) and the footage looks great, but I have tried 4 different video editing programs and none of them support the AVI files that Fraps makes. I heard that Fraps takes the basic avi files and does something with them that a lot of programs do not like, hence the conflict.

So I'm asking the community for help here. I want to know, with straight answers, what is a great. quality, effective program for recording in game footage, that plays nice with video editing software and/or video converter programs? (i.e. Windows movie maker, Pinnacle etc..)

While free would be best, I don't mind paying (a decent price) for a quality hassle free program.

p.s. I have tried Fraps and I like the quality but like I said, but it doesn't play nice with others. I have also tried Camstudio and I was not impressed at all.

Thank you. :unsure2:

FRAPS is the best. There is no other alternative that is as good as FRAPS. What movie editing programs are you using? All the best video editing programs support the AVI video codec that FRAPS records in.

I have tried for years to get fraps to work in Pinnacle, I read that Pinnacle just outright does not take anything made via Fraps, It's been "hit or miss" using Fraps files with Windows movie maker. Just earlier today I took some in game footage from Skyrim (about 30 seconds worth) and tried to import it into WMM and there was a "!" where the file timeline is on the right, in other words, it didn't work. I also have used (the full registered version) of Divx converter plus and tried to convert the Frapsed file to another format to make it easier to handle in video editing programs, but Divx gave me an "Error 32". It didn't "recognize" the format. :sadvaultboy:

All of those programs are crap.

A GOOD list of video editing programs (from least expensive to least expensive):

PowerDirector

Sony Vegas

Adobe Premier

^ ^ this. If you want FRAPs to play nice with other programs, the trick is to encode those raw FRAPs files into something friendlier for your programs. Vdub is your friend

EDIT - also make sure your codecs are uptodate. Can't really go too wrong with K-lite pack.

I use Adobe Premier to work with Fraps files. Works amazingly. Pinnacle and WMM are really not that great. But yes, Fraps is pretty much the best recording software out there.
