Managed to break Skyrim...D'oh!

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 9:44 am

Everything was going swimmingly, 40+ hours of play, lots of mods installed, when suddenly last week, when I went into a player made home and tried to sit on a chair I instead stood near it for around 10 seconds, with the camera locked in place and couldn't move at all. After the time was up the camera reverted to where I had had it before trying to sit down and I moved slightly away from the chair, regaining control of my character. I thought nothing of this, believing it to be a fault with the player made home.

Today I went to a blacksmith for the first time in a while and tried to forge. Pressing E did nothing but lock my camera, make me draw my weapons and stick me to the spot. Now as I said, I have a lot of mods installed so I suspect it is somethign there that is the problem, however I aren't 100%. If anyone could give me any clues, even if it is just the types of mods that it may be, what may be causing the issue, that sort of thing it would be awesome.

Thanks

Your "clues" are in your first sentence. Uninstall the mods and revert to a save prior to their use. If that is not an option, consult the mod authors for support.

Edit: it also sounds like you might want to check out the latest beta update: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1337261-now-on-steam-beta-update-for-skyrim/page__view__findpost__p__20357079.

When I say a lot of mods i mean my data folder is 10 Gb... I am going to uninstall all of the mods that I installed in the last 2 weeks, but I dont really want to have to revert to a save from that long ago for obvious reasons.

Does anyone have any idea what could actually be affecting this? it's as if the animations the cause the display to pop up are broken, and the smithing window etc also.

One cannot accurately judge a game if they have 3rd party stuff involved. In other words, revert to vanilla and go from there. And I mean revert completely, INI files and all.

It definitely sounds like a mod issue... how did you find that many half decent mods already?! I have like 15 that I feel complete enough to do more than just test.

What is the quicket way to revert back to vanilla, do i need to reinstall the game? Also, the only problem with that is that it could corrupt/damage my saves if they dont have content that they should have in them, and im not starting afresh.

Well I did consider that, uninstalling all of my smithing mods. But its not just smithing, I can't pull levers, I cant sit on chairs, it is affecting multiple saves not just one.

Yeah I know, when I get round to it I will have a mass cull. Erm I go on nexus main page, "oh that looks cool!", download. Pretty much it  The biggest files are all retextures etc

The quickest way is to uninstall and remove the INI files and any other remaining piece of leftovers. Backup the saves if you want. Then reinstall. If you're using that many mods, you'll need to do that unless you're using a proper mod manager properly.

I figured it out, checked the mods for updates and found one "Updated fix for animations not working" or something along those lines. Much less painful than starting afresh! Thanks though
