Physics is affected by framerate

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 6:26 am

I've been coming across all sorts of bugs in Skyrim, but one of the biggest annoyances that I have experienced so far is what happens when you open a door that has items nearby. It flings all the items in a 10 foot radius around the room you're in almost always resulting in injury to self. I figured I would record the issue with fraps and post it on youtube for discussions on a fix, but time and time again I could not replicate the bug while recording. It dawned on me after about the 3rd attempt that when I have 60 fps (which is what fraps locks to when recording) the physics seems normal, touching items doesn't cause them to shoot off at 50 mph and hurt my character, jumping onto carts doesn't launch me into the sky, etc. Rarely these physics bugs happen outside, which is when I rarely have over 60 fps.

Even moving objects or bodies at 60 fps is a completely different experience than trying to moving them around with 200 fps. I insist that everybody who has forced Vsync off and are having issues with the physics you try it yourself. This might be one of the reasons that Bethesda chose not to have an option in the launcher to turn off Vsync. Seeing as how the Y axis of mouse movement is also affected by framerate this might just be the case.

Yup. From what I can gather, they intended this game to be played at console framerates (average of 35ish, max of 50), and didn't test it for 60 FPS or anything above AT ALL. [censored] goes horribly, horribly wrong if you do manage to reach that framerate.

PC optimization at its finest. Which is to say, none at all...

Very sad considering how excited everybody was for this game, such a letdown. Bethesda probably figured that modders would fix the game for them so they didn't even bother, it definitely seems that way at least...

Considering how finicky PC games can be with all the different configurations, you'd think if anything all the beta testing would've been on the PC version, not the console version... at least, that would seem to be the logical choice.

Wow this was happening to me too and I had no clue what the problem was.. Yet another mark against Bethesda for the PC version...

Use DxTory or fpslimiter in order to limit your fps without having VSync activated. Works nicely here!

Interesting report, I'll have to limit my game to 59fps and see how the physics perform.

If you want to video record it, don't use fraps.

Set up a camcorder in front of your computer monitor. Or a webcam on a separate machine.

Fraps is annoying for that.

I've been having the same problem, but the fps limiter mod fixed everything.

And this is why everything is supposed to be based on time and not frames per second.

And yet they were claiming before launch that "high end beastly machines" would make Skyrim look amazing, breathtaking, face melting.

Which you would ASSUME means they must have actually tested the game with high-end machines capable of high FPS, and seen how the entire game engine just falls apart because it's linked to FPS rather than actual timing intervals like any other game would do...

Maybe they just got confused and thought modern day PC's auto upscaled textures and took care of everything itself, and so didn't need testing :(

Is anyone else getting the issue of stuff falling through geometry? mostly weapons and interactable/pick-up-able items. IE, the bow in Red Eagle Redoubt entrance, the arrows and a potion in riverwood trader, etc, etc... This has been a problem since Oblivion :-/ really irritating...
