CTD's - Steam Updating Subscribed Mods?

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 9:44 am

Hey there,

So i've just recently been experiencing CTD's - particularly when on the approach to Whiterun. Now Im loaded up with lots of mods and I understand the problem most likely is a conflict or somesuch causing the problem. What I want to know about though is why when I get a CTD Steam reports that Skyrim is updating and it shows a download progress bar. What is it downloading - subscribed mods? It's no coincidence these occur at the same time. Anyone know what Steam is doing there? I understand this is not a Bethesda question but can anyone shed any light.

Thanks,
James

Hi James,
Be very careful and selective with your mods because the game's not mature at all at this time.
Beth is still patching it because it's still full of little problems...
And the new content delivery system is not too slick either.
I start Steam and let it run for ~5 minutes (I make a cuppa tea or whatever) before starting up Skyrim itself.
This allows Steam some time to update itself, or some of the content, if it wishes.
I mean, if it's updating files while you're actually playing, that's probably not a good thing...

Cheers for the reply. Yeah I have 29 subscribed mods on Steam so I have the same annoying wait for checking and loading mods on startup. I have a bunch from the Nexus (and prefer that option). Im generally pretty selective about what I use and take note as to whether they conflict. Mostly they are texture mods anyway. But yes STeam is definitely 'updating' something when Skyrim crashes. Ive notice this updating happen when idle too and it only started as I began to subscribe to mods. The Workshop svcks in comparison to NMM.
