Game crashes when attempting to save

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 9:21 am

I have had a lot of fun using the mods and tweaks provided by other gamers on the Steam Workshop. I haven't had any problems until I try to take this one mod off. Its TOC, Total Cost Overhaull. What it does is increase the price of buying a horse, renting a room, and purchasing cart travel. All of these prices are selected by the user to fit their liking. It was a good mod but i wanted to take it off cuz the carts were charging me 1800 instead of the 500 i had set it to. I first unchecked it from my Data Files when I first start the game. Game loads up, I try to save and the game crashes. When I let the mod run again I am able to save again.

When this first happened I had about 15 mods installed. I have the names if knowing them would help, just ask.

I now have a vanilla verson of Skyrim installed. I first went on steam, deleted all local content of Skyrim. Then i went into my file folders and under common deleted everything else. I then redownloaded the game and thats where im at now. I have been trying to get it working and have found out that a save from 10 hours ago is still working. The other 4 saves wont save the game. When i try to quicksave or auto save it crashes too. I try to make a brand new save (with the loaded unsaveable content) and it still crashes.

I can not imagine what could be messing it up. Of the little I know about gaming and codeing I know that there are tons of things that can go wrong. I am intersted in learning more so even if i'm not able to recover my 10 hours of gameplay I'd be happy at least learning some of the possiable thing that could have gone wrong.

Thanks for any help,
Matt

Hi Matt,
Your game saves still contain traces of that mod, even after it's uninstalled.
As you have noted, your earlier game saves (before you 'overhauled') still function.
I'm sorry but these newer saves are now trashed and NFG.
This is a constant peril when adding and removing mods and trying things out...
You have to keep specific 'turning-point' saves, and be prepared to sacrifice any progress made, if you need to fall back to them.
Again, be cautious and protective of your precious savegames (with so much time & effort invested).
You can't simply 'try' a mod and remove it easily if you don't care for the mod.
Regards

i have similar issue, i managed to workaround the issue by loading a more previous game, and save from that session onward are working ok again.

Gryphon, thanks! Thats what I was thinking, bummer. Could I try going to a cave away from anything that mod changes and trying to save? Would that write a new save without the mod?

Kelmen, Thats what I'm thinking of doing. Losing 10 hours is better than 100!
