Invisible fire and cobwebs

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 10:48 am

Greetings, my fellow Dragonborns!

I seem to have run into a slight problem which seems to be widespread throughout the Skyrim community: firespells and cobwebs are (partially) invisible to me. I have searched for a solution for hours and hours, yet I have not found any. My drivers and DirectX are both up to date. I am using Crossfire on two ATI Radeon HD 3800 series video cards. I have tried installing the so called ENB files from some modder, and though these files fixed my problem, it also created new ones (such as extreme brightness to the point of me looking at a completely white screen).

Is there anyone who could help me? It would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Agadar

I had this problem as well, and I think I resolved my issue by changing the lighting / shadowing for the game, specifically Light Fade distance, and Specularity Fade (I set both to max). I also set my shadow detail to "HIGH" - I believe I had it on low or medium. I've not see the issue since making those changes. YMMV.

I'm using NVidia rather than ATI, but something similar may fix your issue as well. I'd start with the shadow detail, then move on to the distance settings if the shadow detail doesn't fix it up.

I'm not sure I'd characterize this issue as "widespread." It has been reported by several people, but most people haven't run into the issue. I would look at tryiing different detail settings in the launcher, as mentioned above. I would also suggest making sure that your video card drivers are up to date and removing any mods when attempting to ascertain whether the issue is fixed.

Well, it's not doing it to me. I'd suggest returning your game to a default configuration - meaning no mods, fresh ini files, etc. - and then try the latest patch to see if you're having problems. Don't forget to remove (after you've backed up) your ini files from your \documents\my games\skyrim folder so the game can recreate them - as well as returning any video card control panel options back to default values.

This may seem like a pain, but it's probably the only way to identify exactly what is causing your problem. Blaming this on the 1.4.21 update without performing these steps is perhaps not the best way to proceed.

I have this problem to with my Radeon 2600XT. I've been using ENB's patch (ver. 0.9) to fix the problem, but so far, no official patches or mods have addressed it. I tried using ENB's newer patches, but they severely affect my performance and weren't working correctly for whatever reason.

Try downloading an earlier version of the ENB series fix and see if that helps.

It's been a while now. I've continued experimenting with all sorts of different settings, but unfortunately every single combination of settings failed.

The ENB anti-freeze patch works at it should without causing any other problems, but ONLY when I disable Crossfire. However, when I disable Crossfire, my framerate is cut in half and is stuck between 20 and 30, making the game unplayable. In other words, my only option is to not use the ENB anti-freeze patch, which brings me back the original problem which is that of invisible fire and cobwebs.

Seriously, is there no fix at all for this which works?

I'm trying to find proper fix for your problem since 11.11.11 and i think Bethesda doesn't care much about that.

I have that same issue, also ATI Radeon HD 3800 series. I fixed it with ENBseries 0.091 (no cartoonish colours or bugs in that version), but of course I don't use Crossfire.

I presume you're running on low quality, then? When I disable Crossfire on my two cards, I get between 20 and 25 FPS on medium quality.

I meant to say I only have one card to begin with. Though 25 FPS sounds decent to me.

If the framerate is anything lower than 30, I notice it and my eyes become tired of it. And I refuse to play on low quality when I can play it on medium. If I wanted crappy graphics I'd go play world of warcraft, after all.
