What does the game consider as an assalt?

So i'm curious, what does the game consider as an assalt? I've been going around playing the all rounder character to expirience all the possibilities of the game on the first go, but i refuse to kill or engage innocents until i get asked by the darkbrotherhood, still i get lots of assalts on my crime stats wich i have no idea where they come from, 60 is the number i have atm. i'm suspecting it has something to do with companions but i'm not sure.

It's something like you attacked first, or you attacked someone who didn't detect you. They weren't technically hostile yet. Innocence is irrelevant.

I see... so to the game it's like " go ahead get detected and hit on the face before killing then", kinda flawed if you ask me...

Thanks for the answer.

It's just a stat screen. Don't take it as the game judging you.
