Fixing my save files, Doable?

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 11:42 am

So I recently built myself one monster of a machine and I inadvertently formatted my old main drive that i was going to transfer files from. I managed to recover about 5-15 saves not sure since some have same name but when I go to use them it tells me they are from a different version 0 instead of 8. this is odd since the drive that i had steam on wasnt formatted so its the same files. Ive tried the start a new game and after cart ride try to load old files but it says the same thing, is there any way of making the files useable again? I looked for a save editor thinking that I might be able to start a new game and then transfer the info from my old save to the new one but couldnt find anything that way either, any suggestions would be much appreciated, I had 85 hours in the game and was about lvl 65 so Id rather not start over.

Bump any suggestions would be great literally anything that might help would be great. I know this whole thing is my fault for formatting my drive but since I revered it theres gotta be a way.

Seriously not one single idea about how I might fix this issue.

Data recovery is a tricky thing. More than likely, it was unable to recover all the bits of the files. There really isn't much one can do in that case.

Thats really not any help whatsoever. Skyrim recognizes the files as save game files and even the character and everything else for them it just says they are from a different version. If it was a data problem it would tell me they were corrupted save files which it isnt.

Not necessarily. Some of the bits could've been swapped around making it still a valid save but unusable. It's honestly hard to tell with data recovery what the results are going to be like.

Did you have any changes to .ini files like the ugrids change, that were on the old computer, and not on the new one. Also, did you have mods installed on the old pc that you currently aren't using. It sounds like there is something different between your old skyrim and the new one, and not just version numbers like 1.4.
I know that when you use the ugrids setting in the .ini file, the save games are not compatible between the different numbers you set ugrids too.

No I had no mods or changes installed on skyrim for the entire game thus far. The skyrim files updated when I put them on my new drive but the files I transferred from my steam drive were the exact same ones I was using before. Its not giving me an incompatibility with skyrim version though, that i would have been able to work around. It tells me that they are version 0 and mine is version 8 which there isnt one of. I have read on other posts that this kind of a response is given sometimes if skyrm causes you to lose your saves but havent read in any of those posts why or how to fix. I would love to just be able to edit the save files and copy the info to a new save file from this skyrim but couldnt find any way of doing that either but I figure its prolly my best shot at recovering the saves, wish they would make it so you could edit save files.
