The Steam wtf

Hi,

Let me tell you a story. Its a story about how some people got together and decided they were going to do something big. Yes something so big it would revolutionize the way we play games on our PC's. It would make playing on the PC so easy a 5 year old refugee child who has never seen a computer could play it...and mod it.

There idea was a thought, but they left out an important detail. How are people who have used a computer before going to get along with this hand holding software? So here we are, a 22 year old kid who has been PC gaming for 5 years sitting at his computer screaming at the top of his lungs "why is steam downloading 3 gigabytes of [censored] and why can't I [censored] play skyrim?!"

It all started when NMM took a dump on itself. Basically bethesda decided they were going to change the way the load order for mods is decided because their software was not holding the hands of its users quite tight enough. And by this I mean it was not perfect so those being embraced ever so gently by The Steam were left asking themselves "insert issue with steam workshop here because I dont use it so idk wtf the problem was all I know is they screwed with how mods are loaded...". And my texture mods were not loading properly, they were being overwritten by the HD DLC BSAs. So because I knew an update to NMM was coming to learn the new load order creation processes I decided to update it. It failed so critically NMM will no longer launch. Good riddens I say but now I have no way to adjust my load order, because I use SKSE and DERP I deleted my old launcher (or moved it where I cant find it lol).

I went and told The Steam to verify the game cache to DL the launcher. So it does this and completes, and then I notice The Steam is starting to DL somthing. Says its going to take 30 minutes, so naturally I start yelling.

So what did I do to cause this treachery? Well in order to make sure the HD DLC BSAs were not loaing over my skyrim HD files I decided to move them out of my data folder entirely, I don't use them anyway. I extracted them and installed the HD DLC manually, its how I roll, usually. For some context I was using the BSAs that were released before the loose files for sky HD and I was too lazy to extract all of them lol. What happened here is, because I moved the HD DLC files, [censored] steam decided it wanted to DL them again. It does not ask, it doesn't say "hey listen(navi), your HD DLC files are missing go re Dl them". No it says nothing and just starts DLing another 3 gigs of [censored].

The moral of the story is here. If things keep getting made so illiterate people can use them, pretty soon they will be the only ones able to use said things. Beth and steam have pretty much guaranteed I will never use steam workshop, I don't need software that just does whatever it wants.

And Bethesda changing how load order works from how it worked in oblivion was fail. Archive invalidation was so simple you [censored]s.

TLDR:
Don't use The Steam workshop, it will [censored] your children.

So because you didn't know how to disable a mod, steam is the target for your abuse? Cool.

The DLC is registered to your Steam account, just like Skyrim is. If it's files aren't found there, Steam will download them again.

You knew this would happen -you saw it being discussed in the forums. But you went ahead and did it your way. Basically, you blame Steam because you don't want to blame yourself -like i said, you knew.

Now, if you want to mix the old-school methods with the new system:
  • Leave the DLC bsas where they are -obviously!
  • Download File Date Changer from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/filedatech.html. Take the contents of the meshes and textures folder (use search for .nif and .dds respectively), drag them into the app's window and set them all at a later date than the DLC's esps/bsas.
  • If you don't want to mess with such an amount of files, you can instead, set the DLC's files at an earlier date, along with skyrim.esm and the rest of the bsas.
Since you needed assistance, all you had to do, was simply to ask for it. But for God's sake (or whatever deity you believe in) stop ranting and whining like the 12yr old kids I've seen in the MMO's I've been playing for 10 years straight. You're better than this -you should be.

If they were using the file date then that might actually do something -- However somewhere along the line they decided to have the BSA files override loose files and also decided the BSAs should load in Alphabetic order instead of by file date so changing the file date will do nothing !!! (Thus the complaining since things no longer work like you said -- the mods were being loaded by their name with mods named zzz.esp loading last which makes absolutely no sense at all ! (fortunately they have now changed that already as they realize it also made no sense so the latest patch has changed it again )
