[Question] Possible to change the SavePrefs folder?

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 7:14 pm

I'd like to have the 'save' folder anywhere else other than my C: drive, as it's a small SSD that I try to only use for Windows files. (My game is on my D: drive but I also have an E: which would be my prefered option.)

Can some wise souls enlighten me as to as to how to achieve this, if it's possible?

Thanks in advance :)

One route is to use junctions/symlinks. Not sure how comfortable you'd be in doing that, though.

EASY!
The saves go wherever your My Documents folder is located.
Simply move your My Documents to a new location from within Windows (different harddisk or whatever).
I always do this anyway, so if you ever need to reinstall Windows you won't lose all your docs/photos/music/savegames etc.

Can't really judge my comfort level without more idea about what's required. I'm happy editing config files & simple stuff like that & I can follow directions, I'm an industrial engineer (overhead cranes) by trade so I'm not a total numpty.

Please tell me more & if it loses me,I'll seek an alternative.

You need to know how to do this?
Lemme see here...
Okay, from within Windows freshly-rebooted (no Steam, no game - just Windows)
Click Start > Computer (this will open the Windows explorer)
Beneath Libraries open Documents and highlight My Documents; right-click; select Properties
Select fourth tab over: Location
I will choose something like D:\My Documents
Nothing over-complicated, and maintain the My Documents name for the folder.
(Windows likes this, and will still display "Jimmy's Documents" or whatever, if you're looking at for example a network share.)
It will ask if you wish to move everything?
Sure, go ahead and move everything.
Note: if moving to new location on the same harddisk, this will be 'instant'.
But if moving My Documents to a new partition or new drive, these files will have to be physically moved (which can take some time, but at least Music and Photos are no longer a subdirectory, and therefore will no longer all be moved too).
Come back if any problems,

Yeah, soz for confusion Gryphon, my reply was actually to the deaths_soul posting, you posted while I was writing it, I didn't expect another reply so quickly so I didn't use quotes. Doh!

If all else fails I'll use your EASY method but in a perfect world I want to be able to tell Skyrim EXACTLY where to put the save folder not just an alternative 'MyDocs' location.

The 'second reason' for this is I'm trying to work on having 2 seperate copies of my game running, one a semi-vanilla with the new 1.4.24 patch for comparison, the other a 'safe' 1.4.21.04 with all my SD plugins etc working. I'd like sep. locations for the save folders for each so I can play around more, and keep the savegames apart. I think it will be a while before everyone updates all the modz I'm using (if ever from a dirty rumour about SD I've just read) I'd just like the option of having a sixily-running 1.4.21.04 AND a Steam-patched 1.4.24.

..what can I say, I've got enough drive-space for both, just want to see if I can do it.

...WITHOUT resorting to wearing an eye-patch or changing my name to 'Sparrow' ;)

Keej, that's good general information but I'm not "PC" enuff to work out how to apply this to my query. Or even if it's possible with the 'rim.

If I wanted the 1.4.24 - patched game to save to E:SkySaves/124 and the 1.4.21.04 - patched game to save to E:SkySaves/121 how would I go about it?

E2A:- I'm staying Steam-offline until I know it's possible, I don't want my perfectly-acceptable (13.7GB!) 1.4.21.04 to get 'broken' until I know for sure. Maybe it can't be done but if it can I want to try.

Also why does this ***** forum sometimes converting the '&' (and) symbol to & ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS_symbolic_link

That tells you how to do it. It was under the Windows heading on the page I linked. However, if you don't know what symlinks are and such, you're probably better off not messing with it.

With respect, it doesn't tell me how to do it, it tells me what the command is and how it works.

..and, if I'm reading it right, doesn't solve the problem I asked about any better than just moving the whole 'my docs' folder to E:

but yeah, I'll admit this is all a little beyond my 'comfort zone', PC-wise.

I think I need an .ini tweak that tells a specific copy of Skyrim where to put its' saves, not just a generic redirect of the folder where it's already trying to save to.

Actually, it does solve the problem. You can move the "Saves" folder and then create a link and it will be on the other drive but recognized as if it were still in the original folder on the original drive. Here's a better site: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-symlinks-in-windows-vista/

That one I found via a Google search.
