Computer Reboots at Random since Latest Patch

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 3:36 pm

Since the latest patch, Skyrim reboots my computer whenever I play it. The time it takes for Skyrim to crash and reboot my computer varies. Between 3 - 10 minutes. So in essence, I cannot play the game.

I have de-activated all mods and lowered the graphic settings. This does not work. This problem was not prevalent in earlier versions of the game and I've always run the game at the highest graphics with no problems whatsoever before. Attached is my DxDiag.

Is there a fix for this?

Is there a patch coming soon to adress this?

Is there a way to revert to an earlier version so I can play the game until this has been fixed?

A full system reboot, esp. on Windows 7 is often sign of some hardware problem going on.
It's quite possible that it's not caused by the patch, but rather by something else.

You should check the ususal stuff, which is temperatures of CPU and GPU, memory problems and if you have installed the newest drivers.

You can also try and run some stress-tests to see if you can recreate the problem outside of Skyrim.
Programs to use are e.g. Prime95 for CPU and Furmark for GPU.
You can test your memory with programs like memtest.

Did you reinstall the game in case any files got messed up during the patching process?

And what http://www.gamesas.com/user/342260-el-zoido/ said. Programs would at most cause a CTD, not a full system restart.

Is there a way to measure the temperature while actually running the game? That way I can see if it, for whatever reasons, jumps to extreme temperature levels?

Why is it doing it now, and not before?

Is there a way to play the game in a previous version when this problem wasn't prevalent?

Overclocking and measuring temperatures is not something I'm used too, I tried the Prime95 program but I just don't get it, so to speak.

I have not reinstalled the game, I'll try that. I've patched through steam only.

I reinstalled the game, the problem persists.

I installed a couple of temperature measuring softwares, but the GPU temperature never went above 77 C... Before it crashed. But since I had to alt-tab all the time to check the temperature, it might have gone up when I wasn't looking. I don't know at what temperature the computer shuts itself off, tho.

I opened my computer and it was really dusty. That might have something to do with the temperature rise, I guess.

A usual GPU / CPU overload, is it accompanied by FPS drops or anything like that? Cause I don't get anything like it. It's sleek and quick up until the moment the computer just reboots.

What is the CPU temp ?? For a x4 955 the max temp threshold is 62C - http://products.amd.com/en-us/DesktopCPUDetail.aspx?id=618 -- and yeah a build up of dust can cause quite a bit of an increase in temps so cleaning may help (also have the room temps been rising lately as the warmer ambient temp may not be helping and might be why it is now having problems when it didn't when it was a bit cooler in the room.

Better clean out your pc a bit, even if it's not the reason it's always a good thing to do.

Some programs can log your temp in the background so you don't need to alt-tab out of the game.
For GPU you can use GPU-z, there's an logging option, and I think Core-Temp (for CPU) has a logging option, too.

Regarding Prime95, it's easy to use:
When you start it you are directly asked what to do. Otherwise it's Options -> Torture test.
Then just choose "Blend" and 4 threads.
Now just wait and have a look at your temps.

Alternatively, or in addition to, there is also http://downloads.guru3d.com/IntelBurnTest-v2.3-download-2047.htmlI use it along with Prime 95 to test for system stability when I overclock my system.

I'll give all this a whirl over the weekend and get back to this thread. The more and more I listen to you guys, I'm started thinking maybe it was all about a temperature overload. Especially considering the dusty state of my computer. Now, I'm not ruling out the fact that there's something in the latest patch that is, for whatever reason, pushing the CPU/GPU to it's limits.

I have been playing the game at High (not Ultra) settings since it's release and it flows perfectly. I'd like to be able to keep going like that...

Yes MSI afterburner will do that along with many other GPU apps.

Please, also keep in mind to update to the latest drivers. I don't now the intervall for older AMD hardware, but there should already be a new version out for you to pick and install. At least something worth a try.
