Fire looking strange after graphic driver update

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 10:27 am

Hi.

This morning I updated my graphic card drivers. Now I tried playing Skyrim and the fires, waterfall, etc look really weird. It's kinda pixelated..
Here are two screenshots:

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Thanks.

Apparently this is a known issue with the 12.2 pre-cert drivers. Are you using them? If you are using the newest official certified 12.2 drivers then apparently they haven't fixed it in those either yet.

In my thread http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1351782-flickering-in-catalyst-121-what-really-back-to-flickering-now/page__fromsearch__1 I experienced exactly the same issue.

These drivers are what you want. http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst122Previewdriver.aspx

At least they worked for me. They are the 12.2 preview drivers. Hope they work for you as well.

I tried those drivers and sadly it didn't fix my problem. :(

Is there a way to roll back to an earlier driver version?

Yes. Do you use 64-bit Vista or 7? http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx for downloads for all of AMD's previous driver releases. 12.1 should work fine, as should the 12.2 previews (in theory; never tried them myself).

Just scrub the 12.2s off your system...I usually do this by going to the Uninstall/Change a Program control panel, selecting the AMD Catalyst Install Manager, and hitting "Change." You'll get options to uninstall the drivers from there. Let the uninstaller finish, reboot, install whichever driver set you've picked out as a replacement, and reboot again. Should be good to go.

I successfully rolled back to 12.1, it's working again now.
Thanks. =)

Yeah, 12.2 preview worked best for me too, but happy to hear that you found one that worked for you.

I honestly hope that 6xxx HD series cards haven't already been forgotten as far as monthly updates. I know the new series just came out but damn I just paid like over 3 bills for a 6970 less than 6 months ago. It is far from optimized driver wise in contrast to its capabilities. I want to see something in 12.3 official or at the least 12.4 preview.

Agreed Thoth, seriously- I almost JUST bought this graphics card. I am all for forward movement, but supporting hardware is important.

Stay away from AMD if you want to play Skyrim alot. Nvidia seems the way to go pref something with lots of VRAM too.
