Are Argonians Fun in Skyrim?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 1:49 am

I want to make a hand-to-hand character, so I want a beast race for the beast race attack animations. I don't care much about the 15 bonus damage the khajiits get because I plan to use smithing and heavy armor.

What I do care about is the RP potential. Khajiits have the traveling merchants and Elsweyr Fondue to make them kinda fit in with the game environment. I could shop and invest with the traveling merchants a lot and such. Not as good as the orc strongholds, but still pretty neat. I would probably use dragon heavy guantlets for a khajiit and be a mage in some school of magic (haven't done the mages guild yet).

The Argonians have a cool regen ability and I like the idea of playing a reptile/amphibian thing over a cat for some reason. I think an Argonian would look awesome with just daedric gauntlets on going hand to hand. My issue is that I'm worried about the RP potential. I rarely see any Argonians. I got held up by an Argonian once and was asked to do some crime work by another Argonian and once an Argonian mage tried to kill me, but otherwise I'm still looking... The underwater world seems barren-ish from my limited observation as well.

So I guess my question is, from a roleplaying perspective, has playing Argonian payed off for anyone? Any suggestion for an Argonian RP?

There re a few argonians who arent bad, like the ownders of the bee and barb in riften. Some work down by the docks in windhelm, the female seemed nice enough, the guy was a dike. Oh and 2 more in riften one gives you lexicon and I never saw her again and another works at the fishery and has skooma problem.

There is nothing underwater. There is the pilgrims trench, but a waterbreathing potien is all you need, becuase its the only plce you need waterbreathing. Seriously they wasted potential with that, even FNV had an underwater cave to explore, it was useless but pretty, and a few vaults were flooded inside and you found some loot with the rebreather.

Hmm, thanks, good info. I'll check out those Argonians. Really lame that there is nothing underwater  Looks like I'm going with the Khajiit in that case for now. Hopefully there will be some mods or dlc for Argonians in the future...

There is treasure map that shows a chest underwter, but you dont need waterbreathing its very shallow. Its a shame there arent many khajiits either, the caravan ones are ll there are and one in the college of winterhold. I know skyrim is nord home so should have mostly nords, but the orcs had 4 dmn strongholds, 3 (4 including prison) in markarth, one in the mages guild and few scattered around skyrim. Shame really.

If you want a hand-to-hand character, Khajiits are awesome. They have an awesome claw attack. I was doing a bar brawl, and my Khajiit took the guy down in three hits. I highly recommend a Khajiit.

Since lizards are cold blooded argonians tend to freeze up and not move in the northern areas :P but that's how it should be...

A complaint about both the beast races I've been having for a while is their racials. Compared to Oblivion, they've got them both pretty much perfect. Arguably night-eye should be a little longer, but I'm very content with how both of them work. My complaint, then? Neither is necessary. I've yet to encounter any area, 'cept maybe during the Nightingale quest, where it's been too dark that Nighteye is required, or even recommended. Argonians are in the same boat, as everything seems designed close enough to the surface you don't need water breathing. Same with disease, though the hand to hand boost is actually kinda nice for Khajiit. Pretty much ignore both for any functional use. Waterbreathing helms are fairly easy to pick up, if you keep a lookout.

Not whining though, I enjoy my Khajiit character. I just want to make it clear that if you pick a beast race, do so for style, RP, or lore reasons, not because you're under the illusion it will in some way make your life easier. It won't. On the upside, at least they look fairly cool in Skyrim.

The khajiit claw bonus and the gauntlet damage bonus stack, AFAIK, so you'll still be much better off with a khajiit on this point.

OTOH, having played unarmed with a khajiit, I find it a rather ineffective style, mainly because you have such a short reach compared to fighting with weapons - given that combat involves a lot of movement and the fact that you have to be right in something's face to land a blow, you'll end up whiffing a lot.

As for where you'll find nonhostile argonians: mostly in the Windhelm docks area, where they are something of an underclass. There's also a jeweler in the Riften market.

Apart from the caravans, the only "townie" khajiit that I can think of is J'zargo in the College of Winterhold.

Hand-to-Hand damage caps out around 61 (Khajiit, Fists of Steel perk, Daedric gauntlets, Fortify Unarmed enchants on ring and gloves). If you're set on punching your way to glory, Khajiit is the only way to go. Choosing an Argonian would decrease your damage output considerably.
