Do more people live on my street than the entirety of Skyrim

According to some dark elf I talked to on the eastern side of Skyrim, the dunmer fled after Red Mountain's eruption and most of them supposedly came to Skyrim. You sure could fool me.

Honestly, the Imperial City in Oblivion was a pain. It had 5 different sections with a loading screen whenever you went from one to the next section. Because there is a limit how big each section/city can be. It looks like they chose not to do that for Skyrim, and I'm happy with that.

Not all cities are too small but Solitude feels way to small. I mean who runs a big shipping company just to deliver some spices to a stand? If there were many stands, lots of people, it would make sense. And not to mention (again) that the Legion base is there, but it feels more like a small camp. Solitude feels smaller than Skingrad and Skingrad atleast have the support of vintners and farmers so its natural that they support them selves.

Can the game handle more people in the cities? Actually, let me flip the question: can our generation of systems handle more people in the cities?

The systems can. Bethesda's engine can't.

If this is about hardware, then perhaps the consoles might not. Its a shame if it all boils down to a 6 years old generation of consoles, were in 2011.

My five year old computer runs Skyrim on ultra++ now. So yes a computer can certainly run this game, i haven't even tested the FPS on medium or high.
I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade my computer if i didn't have the power to run it, this is one installment i have been waiting for a long time.

Some can, some can't. Hell, some people can't even run the game for various reasons. I guess it's another one of those "happy medium" things.

Wait, wait, wait...

Matt (Lead Skyrim Artist):The armor system is very similar to Oblivion's. The main difference is that the upper and lower body armors, the cuirass and greaves, have been combined into one piece. This helps create armor styles that have the look we needed for Skyrim. In most of the Nordic designs we created, the upper armor would completely cover the lower armor, making it unnecessary. We get much better visual results combining those pieces, and it renders a lot faster too, so we can put more people on screen, so that was an easy tradeoff for us. We can also make a lot more armors now, so the number and variation types are more than we've ever had.

So I gave up my greaves and yet still...

Technically they did put more people on screen quite frequently. How many times did you go into battles with 16+ npcs present in Oblivion, Morrowind, etc? You didn't unless you modded it. Things like the final Oblivion Gate, and the Battle for Kvatch were the largest battles there were, and there less than 10 on screen at any given time. I'm not arguing against the OP, but comparing it to his street in real life is silly, and they did actually get more people on screen. I'm okay with most cities, but Solitude could use a bump. All cities could benefit from the holidays listed in the wiki, etc. But I can completely understand why it's not implemented. Some people's systems can't even run the game as it is. This could easily just be a happy medium. You can't max things out because not everyone can push that sort of thing.

I liked the tons of NPC's that were roaming around in Daggerfall. They added to the realism of the game. It would have been nice to have a few dozen NPC's in the cities even if they just had some canned response if spoken to by the player.

That would be cool, it's just the difference is in Daggerfall they were just 2d sprites, it's a lot different now. You can spawn a bunch of NPCs yourself if you're on PC and see how it runs.

Having some little "suburbs" with a spattering of NPC houses and more common shops and such could add quite a lot of depth to the cities. Everything now feels like someone was just filling out a checklist for what constituted a city.
And missing some of the checklist.

generally i feel that sometimes it's a bit too small. solitude needs more people, but i would like to see maybe small events in the towns once a month where it populated by more people, or a special bard comes to town and the pub gets super packed. i also wouldn't mind some npc that shrug you off or just ignore you altogether that can buffer out towns a little bit. not going crazy but just to see if their is really anything worth staying around to save.
