Need help. After update, all voicesspeechshouts gone

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 10:51 am

Ever since the most recent update, all of my character speech - this includes Dragons Shouts (I still know the words, but cannot use shout ability) and subtitles thereof no longer exist. I have tried the following:

1. Verifying game cache files
2. Re-installing entire game and all mods
3. Re-installing entire game minus mods
4. Re-installing entire game, deleting all old saves and starting fresh

So far, I've got nada. Nothing works. No speech. Ever. From anyone. I checked Steam's forums; it's clear others have experienced this, but everyone's too busy trolling one another to post viable solutions ( I don't have the disc version to install from; all I've got is Steam).

Any ideas? I can't even enjoy my Skyrim anymore. :swear:

I'd appreciate any help anyone here can give.

Thanks! :)

If you don't get much help here, I suggest reposting in http://www.gamesas.com/forum/180-pc/ section of the forums. It's where all the clever kids lurk.

My Documents > My games > Skyrim > saves

If theres nothing there, then your saves are gone, if there is some stuff there, then your saves are still there, they just wont register in the game for some reason.

On a side note how far into the game were you? I recently installed 64-bit windows on my PC and forgot to backup my saves (oops) I had 72 hours in there and was level 30 , SO i created a new character from scratch, and now im back to level thirty after about 40 more hours of playtime

I know how/where to delete saves (thx anyway though :) ) and I'm on my 2nd character, for the second time at Lv54+. I really, really, really don't want to start again... not that it matters. I've tried that anyway (copy, paste to external, delete saves). No dice. Still no voices, speech animations or speech of anykind. It would be different if the animations were in place... but they aren't. And I don't know why. Rarrgh.

For a second I thought you were saying you lost your saves, well im tired and i must have misread it lol. Anyway I would reinstall the game fully (it doesn't get rid of your saves)

Check your soundcard / audio codic vendor for a driver update, then load up Skyrim to see if that fixed it.

I'm confused about what you mean. You hit the shout button and nothing happens? Is that it? Or there's no dialog audio at all from anyone?

Okay, that might matter... but if it were the driver, other programs BESIDES Skyrim would be affected... and Skyrim wouldn't be missing its speech animations. Why are folks missing that part? Watch when characters talk to you in Skyrim: thier lips move and facial expressions change. This isn't happening for me. At all. Ever. And only in Skyrim. That's not a driver issue; that's a game asset issue.

Both. Hit dragon shout button(s) - nada. People don't talk and their animations for speech are gone as well. I've validated files, started from fresh installs + new games... nothing works. Ever. No speech, no speech animations; all gone bye-bye.

EDIT: This happened right after the latest update. Please, for the love of God, Bethesda, let me have my Skyrim back!

Then it sounds like your "Voices.bsa" file got corrupted (or, for some reason, it's missing).

Try backing up your Voices.bsa in a folder that's outside your game directory such as My Documents (very important step!), then delete the original Voices.bsa file in your game directory. After that's done, open Steam to see if it will auto-download a new Voices.bsa file for you. If not, copy your backup Voices.bsa file from your My Documents and place it back into your game directory.

At that point, all you can do is contact customer service for a resolution.

I've tried that. I've even tried having a buddy - with a working game (as far as I know) - copy his folder and all of his stuff to me, then copy all of his stuff over and tried that. Still no dice. Steam says "No! No speech for you!"
