Weird Freezing during gameplay

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 10:12 pm

So I've noticed a weird freezing issue lately. Now, I'm currently unemployed, so when I'm not looking for a job, I'm playing Skyrim. Thus, I have 800+ hours logged into Skyrim. I've started a new game dozens of times and completed several playthroughs.

My issue is that lately, after I complete a certain number of quests, the game starts to freeze. Through different tests, I've finished the Main Quest, Companions, Thieves Guild, and Civil War. A freeze happens sometimes when I'm changing cells (opening doors, on a road, etc) or immediately after I fast travel and appear at my destination.

When the game freezes, all video stops and it literally freezes. Sound keeps playing, music keeps playing, but video stops and controls don't respond.

I've noticed it's not a mod issue, but here is my mod list, in load order:
The Parthurnaax Fix (Steam Workshop)
Smithing Perks Overhaul
Lore Friendly Armor pack
Enchanting freedom
Arrowsmith-Simple Fletching (Steam Workshop)
Whiterun Enchant-Rotated
Riverside Shack

It's not a computer hardware issue, because it was working fine up until about 2 weeks ago. I think it's a save game size issue, as it only happens when I've played a specific save for a while. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game with no change.

Any ideas or fixes would be much appreciated.

The PC is a weird animal....I was having that problem (Video stuck, sound still plays) in Oblivion and took ages to find out it was a failing Power supply.

Check your fans ..clean if necessary, monitor your temps, This could just be a driver (video) getting weird.

There are some mods at Nexus that deal with save game bloat , and the like. I use the Skyrim timers mod...Cleans up a bunch of stuff.

What size are your saves? My current 277 hour character is level 51 and the save is 12 meg. <

Looks like my most recent save is 7.21 MB. Haven't tried a mod. I'll look at that.

I looked on nexus. Couldn't find Skyrim Timers, did find something that said it would fix random crashes, but it isn't compatible with the latest patch.

Not a size issue....that is a small save size....Most weren't having problems till about the 20 Meg size.

I searched nexus for "timers" this was the only hit...http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=3084 its what I use. But Save size it not your problem,

Try without mods...Mods are in their infancy, much is to be learned about Skyrim and mods. When ever there is a problem , always think mods first...lol

Whats system specs....this could be another ...running out of RAM...

You have enough ram.....One thing to try is a Defrag (as long as its not an SSD) I use Auslogics Disk Defrag, and with that after you do an anolyze you can look at what files are fragmented, and in how many parts....I regularly do the anolyze, because every time my Save is scattered around the disk, last time i checked my 13 MEG save was in 22 parts...Had a problem weeks back..save wouldn't load...defraged just the save and it loaded.

my save is 7mb and im only 44hrs in, is that bad?
Not at all.....at 55 hours my save was 7 meg.....at 150 hours it was 10 MEG ...and at present 227 hours it is 13 meg.

Play style has a lot to do with it, If you touch everything and drop crap around the world ..your save will grow...
I only touch what i want, leave my trash in dead bodies, and rarely place things in the world. Exception ...I do decorate my house...lol
