Having Graphics Issues Lately? ATI Card

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 2:56 pm

Numerous posts floating around involving graphical issues which vary but mostly include artifacts or black pixels appearing on screen. If you are experience this issue and are using AMD drivers 12.2 or 12.3 chances are very strong that this is your problem. Unless you have one of the new 7xxx series cards I highly recommend fully uninstalling your CCC(the config will save) and installing this version which is 12.1. The link is from Guru3d which I trust if anyone has a direct link from AMD please share. AMD has videos on how to uninstall and install drivers if you go their site if you are unsure as to what you are doing. Making a restore point before starting is also advised if you have any doubts as to what you are doing. AMD support can also help you with this and that is what they are there for personally I do not want to give installation and uninstallation advice so please don't ask. I am merely a messenger and observer.

AMD Driver List: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx

Also--just to clear up some confusion that's going around...AMD royally screwed the pooch on these drivers. If you visit their downloads page, check the Steam news post about them, etc., you'll see them listed as 12.2. This is correct, since they were originally intended to be a February release. (AMD's driver numbering corresponds to the year + month released, so 12.2 is the February 2012 release. Etc.)

However, when they're installed, if you check the version number in CCC, it's listed as 12.3. This is incorrect. The "real" 12.3s, aka the March release, are still forthcoming. How or why AMD screwed this up, I can't imagine.

So, if you have these drivers installed, are having the above-mentioned issues, and need to roll back, downloading 12.2 will not fix your issue. You're just installing the same drivers over again. Drivers considered to be good and "safe" are either the 12.1 official release or the 12.2 preview. Not the pre-certifieds: they're the same as the 12.2/12.3 release, just without official WHQL certification.

Which driver works best for you will depend on your system, your card model, and whether or not you have Crossfire or a single card set-up. FWIW I'm using the official 12.1s with my single 6970, and have zero complaints.

Yeah, just to let you guys know that I've tried the 12.1 drivers with my ATI 7950 and it'll install, but it's only partial and the CCC won't be accessible, plus your card won't actually make use of the drivers.

May I ask how the 12.1 drivers compare? Is your frame-rate better/worse? I tried the 12.3 drivers on my 7950 but I actually got worse frame-rates, and considerably worse on games such as Ghost Recon: Online.

That link? I can't say how the new series cards respond but the 5 and 6 series cards were having issues regarding Skyrim. Which Ghost Recon are you talking about btw?

I have 2 Radeon 5870's and find that the http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst121Previewdriver.aspx works the best for me.

Hope it does playing without AA and moreso AF on a decent card is ridiculous. GG AMD on this fail since Bethesda is not at fault in this situation...at all and a cursory glance of my overall posts will show how much disdain I have for them.
