CTD-ing due to... number of mods?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 12:48 am

So suddenly, without having installed anything or altered anything, my game started CTD-ing. I had some minor problems before, CTD from time to time or purple objects (that required me to restart the game), but nothing critical until now.

In short, my game started CTD-ing and seems that in some way number of activated .esp files is connected to it. When I have all mods activated, game crashes during the loading screen. When I deactivate a number of them, I can play... but game CTD-es after some time again. When I deactivate few more .esp files, I again gain some more time before another CTD and so on.

I tried to delete .ini files (so the game could re-create them) and, when that failed, than attempted completely reinstall the game, but the result is the same. The problem is the same for both 1.4 and 1.5b versions.

What is especially interesting is that this happens even if I load an earlier save, the game crashes... if I click on New game, the menu options go away... but the screen remains as does the Dragonborn title music... unless I deactivate enough .esp files.

I have Windows 7, 4GB of RAM, ATI Radeon HD5670

What I especially don't understand is why did the problem appear out of sudden while it was not present at all before...

EDIT: After the re-installation, seems that http://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/tumblr_m11nvhl35t1r8zfyfo1_1280.jpg

Didn't you post this somewhere else? You're running 100+ mods or so, right?

Few other posts here and on Nexus about this and so far haven't seen a solution to it as appears not to have a common source. With me it is mods that change the exterior world, can get some to run but when add in x+1 the game ctd's on startup when try to load a save. I have removed every mod and started adding back in and get the ctd repeatedly when start adding mods that change the world space. One thing planning to take out next is the mod that added in new map with roads and see if issue is placing new markers on it. So can't give you a definitive answer on what causing these ctds at this point.

Given the difficulty of harmonizing a multitude of mods in an effective manner mixed with a strong desire to do so anyway, I would strongly recommend using S.T.E.P.-it's available on Nexus.

I used this as a base to build off of and have had a glorious time of it. It is important to follow the installation instructions scrupulously, though-it requires a lot of patience, but it's worth it.

I played Oblivion for many years, and learned a lot about modding, so I have had a lot of success adding a great many mods on top of S.T.E.P.-my game is almost 15 gigs now.

On the other hand, I have also run into a problem in the MQ, where Paarthunax won't appear-but I think that's only tangentially related to the matters discussed in this thread-with the setup I've described I've had only 2 bugs in over 330 hrs of play (+ very rare CTDs).

Have fun.

I only have "53" Mods installed and activated in Skyrim and I'm still getting the wretched and accursed Crashes to Desktop randomly, random freezes in game, random loading screens freezes and crashes, Bethesda needs to go through these various issues carefully and completely and truly "Fix" these various in game bugs and issues today.

I'm running 15 mods and my game is absolutely stable. All mods installed via NMM, nothing from the Steam workshop. Load order tweaked according to the BOSS report. HD DLC texture packs referenced in my .ini file, most other mods are "loose files".

So if anyone's having trouble with mods, run without them, regenerate your .ini files, make sure you're running the latest GPU drivers and get Steam to revalidate your Skyrim files. If you're running a lot of texture replacements, use GPU-Z to monitor your VRAM usage.

I had a similar problem, but not to the extent that you do. Whenever I install a new mod from the Nexus, my game CTD's 2-3 times on startup and then it works just fine after that. I don't load Skyrim from Steam; I'm running the script extender so I can use the mod to increase skill caps to 300 and the perks mod that goes with it. As a result I started downloading the mods I want to play around with from Steam and I've had no trouble since then.

You have two options: either temporarily disable anti-aliasing in Skyrim until the next set of Catalyst drivers comes out, or roll back to an older driver set. This is a very well known issue with the latest version of the AMD drivers. (12.2, although the CCC reports them as 12.3.)

running w/ an a**load of mods, stably, is absolutely possible; it merely takes drive, patience, and apptitude. S.T.E.P. is a great system to create an 'enhanced vanilla', but it is not necessary; if you want to heavily modify your game w/out the onus of utilizing a modpack (which unaccountably got bad press in both Morrowind and Oblivion forums, though Workshop is offering them, now), then be prepared for many grueling hours of CTDs and other foolishness. Alternatively, if running a large amount of mods synchronously is what you want, and your willing to patiently follow a proven method, use S.T.E.P. as a base; copy your entire game folder (once S.T.E.P. is completed and you are assured that it is working), also copy your NMM folder, and the entire Skyrim folder at 'my documents=>Skyrim' into a master file on your desktop (or wherever), and then play your game normally. This will allow you to add mods as you wish, hopefully intelligently-as you should have learned some smart modding techniques while installing S.T.E.P.); if you mess up, it should be easy to correct your errors by drawing on the pristine files you have in your master save. Additionally, I keep Steam offline to prevent unintended (hence uncontrolled) changes, and thereby allowing time for SKSE, SkyBoost, etc. to update when necessary. I also regularly back up my entire game folder, after I have made significant mod additions/changes that seem to work well, for easy reverting if I make a critical error in judgement. Backing up your savegames (and, thus, your .ini files) is also advisable.

It's true that I am not entirely error-free: I CTD every few RL days 1-2 times every few hours, and god**** Paarthunax is not appearing as he should for a MQ stage-but I think this will prove solvable (and doesn't bother me overly much, anyway)...

...on the other hand, I am running upwards of 130 mods, with over 350 hrs. in, on 2 characters; I do this on Ultra (everything maxed) and all the (significant and high-quality) graphical improvements I can find with 4 gigs RAM, GeForce 560 Ti (1 gig), and 3.2 (?) QuadCore; I also changed my pagination, and use IObit GameBooster, in addition to the Skyrim specific apps like SkyBoost.

This method has worked well for me, and if you peruse the S.T.E.P. discussion on Nexus and the ancillary sites referenced in that discussion, it could prove beneficial to you as well.

Have fun,
